During a refueling stop at Al Udeid Air Base near Doha, US President Donald Trump met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Saturday and confirmed that plans for an international peacekeeping force in Gaza are “advancing steadily.” He emphasized that efforts to bring lasting stability to Gaza are “moving forward with strong coordination.”
Speaking aboard Air Force One alongside the Emir and Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, Trump expressed admiration for the Gulf nation. “They are truly great allies,” he said. “These are two great men. The Middle East is now safe, and it will remain that way for a long time.”
The Emir, smiling in response, replied, “Hopefully.”
Trump further highlighted Qatar’s readiness to contribute to regional peace, noting that the country is prepared to provide peacekeeping troops and logistical support if required. “Qatar is a key partner in maintaining regional stability,” he told reporters, adding, “This should lead to an enduring peace in Gaza.”
Standing beside Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that washington is actively coordinating with international allies to draft a potential agreement or UN resolution authorizing a multinational force for Gaza. “That kind of legal framework is crucial for many nations that have expressed interest in contributing, whether through personnel, funding, or both,” Rubio stated. “A dedicated team is currently developing that framework.”
While Israel has excluded Turkish military participation from the proposed mission, the Trump administration continues to encourage Arab countries to commit troops and financial aid toward the initiative. The goal is to ensure a stable and lasting peace in Gaza following years of conflict and humanitarian challenges.
Before heading to Asia, President Trump made a brief stop in Qatar as part of his diplomatic outreach tour. His five-day itinerary includes visits to South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia, aimed at reinforcing US partnerships in the region. The tour also comes as Washington and Beijing work to reduce tensions ahead of Trump’s scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Seoul next week.
With these moves, the Trump administration aims to demonstrate America’s leadership in fostering Middle East peace and global diplomatic cooperation.
