New York: After delivering a sharp critique of international leaders in his UN speech, US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly. The high-profile meeting took place against the backdrop of rising tensions between Russia and NATO following repeated Russian military airspace violations.

Before the bilateral talks, Trump commended Zelenskyy in front of reporters, hailing him as a courageous leader. “He’s a brave man, and he’s putting up one hell of a fight,” Trump said. “We have about thirty meetings lined up today, but this is one of the most important. We deeply admire Ukraine’s fight—it is truly remarkable.”

Since Trump returned to office in January, this marks the fourth meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy. Their discussions coincide with stalled US-led peace efforts in Ukraine and heightened geopolitical risks as NATO partners grapple with Moscow’s continued aggression.

Trump Backs NATO Right to Shoot Down Russian Aircraft in Allied Airspace

During the joint media interaction, Trump was asked whether NATO should take military action by shooting down Russian aircraft if they entered alliance airspace. His response was clear: “Yes, I do.”

He further highlighted Russia’s ongoing military and economic struggles. “The Russian economy is in terrible shape right now. Ukraine is doing an outstanding job holding back this very large army. What was supposed to be a quick war has dragged on for more than three years, and Russia doesn’t look very distinguished.”

Earlier that day, First Lady Olena Zelenska joined President Zelenskyy in New York for the UN General Assembly’s high-level sessions. Trump, in his speech to the assembly, also took aim at Europe, insisting that NATO allies must stop purchasing Russian oil and gas, warning that such actions indirectly fund Moscow’s war machine.

In his characteristically blunt style, Trump added: “Who the hell ever heard of that one? china and India are the main funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil. Shockingly, even NATO nations haven’t cut off Russian energy imports, and that makes me very unhappy.”

Zelenskyy Engages in High-Level Diplomatic Talks

Before meeting Trump, President Zelenskyy also held discussions with US officials, including special envoy Keith Kellogg. His visit to New York is part of a broader diplomatic mission during which world leaders are also scheduled to meet for the Crimea Platform summit and the inaugural session of the Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.

Emphasizing the importance of international partnerships, Zelenskyy declared: “Partners’ assistance is crucial. This diplomatic week will certainly bring new support for Ukraine.”
