Tulsi Gabbard Warns Islamism Threatens American Freedom, Sparks Nationwide Debate

Tulsi Gabbard, former Democratic congresswoman and current U.S. National Intelligence Director, has issued a sharp warning about what she described as “Islamist ideology”, arguing that it poses a serious challenge to individual freedom, constitutional values, and democratic principles in America.

Speaking during a public discussion that later gained massive traction online, Gabbard emphasized that Islamism should not be confused with Islam as a faith. Instead, she defined Islamism as a political ideology that, in her view, seeks to influence governance, law, and public life in ways that conflict with America’s founding values.

According to Gabbard, the core concern lies in attempts to impose religiously inspired political systems through legislation or social pressure. She claimed that such efforts undermine the concept of personal liberty that forms the backbone of the U.S. Constitution.

Citing specific examples, Gabbard pointed to Paterson, New Jersey, which has publicly identified itself as a majority-Muslim city. She alleged that local developments reflect broader global patterns where religious values are enforced through political or legal mechanisms.

“Paterson, New Jersey takes pride in being the first Muslim city,” Gabbard said. “They are attempting to apply Islamic values by enforcing them on people through laws or, in some cases, coercion. We have seen how this plays out in other parts of the world.”

She further stated that similar trends are not limited to one region. Referencing cities such as Houston, Gabbard argued that the issue is not hypothetical or a future concern. “This is not something that could happen,” she told the audience. “It is already happening here, within our borders.”

Throughout her remarks, Gabbard repeatedly drew a distinction between religious freedom, which she said must be protected, and political Islam, which she described as fundamentally opposed to individual liberty.

“The bottom line is this,” Gabbard asserted. “There is no such thing as individual freedom or liberty when we talk about the threat of Islamism. It is fundamentally incompatible with the foundation of freedom in our country.”

She explained that the American system is built on the belief that freedom is an inherent right, not something granted by the state. According to Gabbard, ideologies that place authority above individual liberty directly challenge this principle.

“When we understand that our freedom comes from God and no one else,” she said, “we begin to understand the seriousness of the threat posed by Islamist ideology.”
