Why Donald Trump Might Not Have a Fantastic Friday Tomorrow

Former US President Donald Trump has long been vocal about his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He has advocated for it, demanded it, and even complained that Barack Obama received the honor “for no reason.” Yet, despite his characteristic confidence and flair for drama, Trump’s chances of joining past American laureates such as Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama appear increasingly unlikely.

As the Norwegian Nobel Committee prepares to announce the 2025 Peace Prize at 11 a.m. on Friday, Trump — the showman and political performer — is expected to be watching closely. His most recent claim to fame? Trying to broker an initial peace framework between Israel and Hamas.

Trump’s Fascination with the Nobel Peace Prize

Trump’s fixation on the Nobel Peace Prize is not new. During his first term, he was nominated for his role in the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Now, in his second term, he claims to have resolved “six to seven wars” within months, including one between India and Pakistan that he says could have gone nuclear.

While Pakistan publicly supported his nomination, India dismissed his interference, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi making it clear that such mediation was unwarranted. The diplomatic fallout included a trade impasse and 50% tariffs, highlighting the limits of Trump’s self-proclaimed peacemaking.

In addition to Pakistan, other symbolic nominations came from Gabon, Cambodia, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — yet all were submitted past the February 1 deadline and thus deemed invalid for this year’s prize.

The only valid nomination came from Congresswoman Claudia Tenney of New York, citing Trump’s role in drafting the Abraham Accords. This means his best shot at the Nobel might not come until next year.

Trump’s Hollow Peace Claims

Analysts believe Trump’s Nobel hopes are weak because the Norwegian Nobel Committee favors long-term, verifiable peace efforts rather than short-lived diplomatic stunts. Trump’s self-proclaimed successes often lack substance or accuracy.

He has taken credit for resolving conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan, though experts clarify it was a limited economic agreement, not true peace. The president’s repeated confusion between “Albania” and “Armenia” underscores his superficial understanding of these issues.

Similarly, Trump claimed to have stopped fighting between Rwanda and Congo, but violence continues in Congo, with no involvement from the key M23 militia. He also bragged about preventing new clashes between Serbia and Kosovo, despite the fact that both nations have been largely peaceful for over a decade.

The only verifiable mediation was between Thailand and Cambodia in July, after airstrikes over a border dispute — but Malaysia played a crucial role there, not Trump. Even his claim of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran came after the US joined strikes on Iranian facilities, undermining the notion of peacemaking.

Such exaggerations clash with Nobel principles, which prioritize genuine, sustained conflict resolution over self-promotion.

Since beginning his second term, Trump has mentioned the Nobel Peace Prize at least seven times on Truth Social in just eight months. Reports from Norway even suggest that he called the country’s finance minister, Jens Stoltenberg, to discuss tariffs — and the Nobel Prize.

“Trump is, in many ways, the opposite of what the Nobel Peace Prize stands for,” said historian Oeivind Stenersen, co-author of a book on the award. “The prize represents global cooperation and diplomacy, not unilateral boasting.”

Who Could Win the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize?

If not Trump, then who? The Nobel Committee tends to honor quiet humanitarians and organizations making meaningful contributions. Last year’s laureate was Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese group of atomic bomb survivors advocating for nuclear disarmament.

Given the ongoing global crises, potential 2025 contenders include Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, watchdogs like the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, and Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

As the Nobel Committee readies its announcement, Trump’s Friday might not turn out to be so “fantastic” after all — especially if the prize once again goes to those who quietly change the world instead of those who loudly claim to.
