Sensex Today: Jumps 900 Points as Brent Crude Falls

Indian stock markets opened sharply higher on Monday, November 2, as easing crude oil prices and renewed foreign investor buying supported sentiment. The decline in Brent crude from its six-month high, alongside hopes of progress in discussions aimed at ending the Iran conflict, provided relief to investors concerned about energy costs and inflation.

At 9:16 am, the BSE Sensex had gained nearly 900 points, or 1.19%, to trade at 75,349.07. The Nifty 50 also indicated a positive start after closing at 23,053.1 on Friday. GIFT Nifty futures were at 23,258.5 at 7:58 am, signalling an upbeat opening for the domestic benchmark index.

Market sentiment also received support from Reliance Industries, which reported a stronger-than-expected increase in September-quarter net profit. The company’s performance, particularly in its energy and digital services businesses, added to the positive domestic cues.

Brent Crude Falls from Six-Month High

One of the major factors supporting Monday’s market opening was the retreat in international crude oil prices. Brent crude futures declined to around $111 per barrel, compared with approximately $118 on Friday, when prices touched a six-month high.

The decline followed reports of discussions involving Iranian and Qatari officials for a third consecutive day. The talks are aimed at securing an agreement to end the US-Israeli war on Iran, raising hopes that tensions could ease and concerns about global oil supplies could reduce.

Lower crude prices are particularly important for India because the country relies heavily on imported oil to meet its energy requirements. A sustained decline in international prices could reduce the pressure on India’s import bill, ease inflationary concerns and improve the operating environment for companies that depend on fuel and energy.

Ponmudi R, chief executive officer of stock broking platform Enrich Money, said discussions involving Iranian officials and Qatari mediators had raised hopes of a possible breakthrough. Such progress could ease supply concerns and improve the outlook for global energy markets.

However, the market’s response will depend on whether the discussions lead to a lasting agreement. Any renewed escalation in the conflict or disruption to energy supplies could push crude prices higher again.

Foreign Investors Return to Indian Equities

Foreign institutional buying provided another positive signal for domestic equities. Foreign investors purchased Indian shares worth Rs 36 billion, or approximately $379.53 million, on Friday, according to provisional data.

The purchase marked their sixth session of buying in the previous 10 trading days. This suggests a possible improvement in foreign investor sentiment after an extended period of selling pressure in Indian markets during 2026.

Foreign portfolio investor activity remains an important factor for Indian equities because overseas flows can influence market liquidity, currency movements and valuations. A sustained return of foreign buying could provide additional support to benchmark indices, although the latest figures alone do not establish a lasting reversal in investment trends.

Sensex and Nifty End October on a Positive Note

Indian benchmark indices ended a two-month losing streak in October, recording gains despite uncertainty in global markets. The Nifty 50 advanced 1.9% during the month, while the BSE Sensex gained 2.7%.

Information technology stocks, resilient corporate earnings and expectations of possible relief on capital gains tax supported the recovery. The performance indicated that domestic equities were able to regain some ground after facing pressure in the preceding two months.

Corporate earnings have remained an important focus for investors as companies report their September-quarter financial results. Stronger-than-expected performances can help support valuations, particularly when global economic and geopolitical developments create uncertainty.

Reliance Industries Beats September-Quarter Profit Estimates

Reliance Industries, India’s largest company by market capitalisation, added to the positive sentiment after reporting a 40.6% increase in quarterly net profit. The result exceeded market expectations and was supported by strong performances in its energy and digital services businesses.

The company’s results highlighted the contribution of its diversified operations at a time when investors are closely assessing the impact of energy prices, consumer demand and technology-related growth on corporate earnings.

Jio Platforms, Reliance Industries’ digital services arm, reported 13.7% growth in quarterly net profit. The business has also attracted significant investor attention following its stock market debut last week, which made it India’s second-largest company by market capitalisation.

Jio’s performance is particularly important for investors tracking India’s digital economy, as its results provide an indication of the earnings momentum within Reliance’s telecommunications and digital services operations.

What Investors Will Watch Next

Monday’s strong opening reflects the combined influence of easing crude prices, foreign investor purchases and encouraging corporate earnings. These factors have improved the immediate outlook for Indian equities after the benchmark indices posted gains in October.

Investors will continue to monitor developments in the Iran conflict and the direction of crude oil prices. A sustained decline in energy costs could improve sentiment towards sectors sensitive to fuel prices and reduce concerns about imported inflation. Any breakdown in diplomatic discussions, however, could quickly reverse the improvement.

Foreign institutional investor activity will also remain important. Continued buying could strengthen market confidence, while a return to heavy selling may limit further gains.

On the domestic front, September-quarter earnings from major companies, including Reliance Industries and Jio Platforms, will remain in focus as investors assess whether corporate profitability can support the market’s recovery.

Although the nearly 900-point opening gain in the Sensex signals strong early optimism, the sustainability of the rally will depend on developments in global energy markets, geopolitical conditions, foreign capital flows and the broader corporate earnings outlook.
