The internal crisis within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) deepened after Rohini Acharya’s public criticism brought focus to Rameez Nemat – a close aide of Tejashwi Yadav, an accused in a 2022 Uttar Pradesh murder case, and the son-in-law of a former Samajwadi Party MP. His sudden prominence is stirring unease inside the RJD, already shaken by its electoral collapse.
The controversy erupted when Rohini, daughter of RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav, accused Rameez and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav – both considered key figures in Tejashwi’s inner circle – of forcing her to “cut off” ties with her family. Her remarks came just a day after the RJD’s tally nosedived from 75 seats in 2020 to only 25 in the recent Assembly Elections.
Speaking at Patna airport, Rohini alleged that she had been effectively expelled. She claimed that Rameez and Sanjay were shielding themselves from accountability for the party’s electoral defeat and that questioning them invited humiliation or abuse.
“I am leaving politics and ending all family relations. This is what Rameez and Sanjay Yadav told me. I am accepting full responsibility,” she wrote in a post on X.
Later speaking to reporters, a visibly distressed Rohini said: “I don’t have a family now. You should ask Rameez, Sanjay Yadav, and Tejashwi Yadav. They are the ones who threw me out. They don’t want to take responsibility. The whole nation is asking why the party failed. If you take the names of Sanjay Yadav or Rameez, you are thrown out, insulted, and abused.”
THE UP CONNECTION
Rameez Nemat hails from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh. His early association with Tejashwi began through cricket – they played for the same club – and over time, he became part of the RJD leader’s political team. For the past two years, Rameez has worked closely with Tejashwi and even ran the RJD’s war room during the recent Assembly campaign.
His family has deep roots in UP politics. His father-in-law, Rizwan Zaheer, a Samajwadi Party leader and former MP from Balrampur, is currently lodged in jail for the 2022 murder of Firoz ‘Pappu’, ex-chairman of Tulsipur Nagar Panchayat. Rameez and his wife are co-accused in the same case and are presently out on bail. He has accompanied Zaheer to several meetings with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, underscoring his political linkages in the state.
Despite the criminal case, Rameez’s influence within Tejashwi’s operations continued to grow. He was assigned key responsibilities during the election campaign, making his proximity to the RJD leader more visible.
Rohini’s explosive remarks have brought this inner circle under public scrutiny for the first time, at a moment when the RJD is grappling with internal rifts and its worst electoral performance in years. The NDA, with 202 seats, cruised past the majority mark, leaving the opposition bloc fragmented and disoriented.
Meanwhile, JD(U) leaders Lallan Singh and Sanjay Jha have already reached Delhi as the party moves swiftly toward government formation, further sidelining a weakened RJD.
