The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday extended the submission deadline for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by one week in five states and one Union Territory. The extension applies to Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttar Pradesh.

As per the revised schedule, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat must now submit their SIRs by Friday, December 19, 2025, instead of the earlier deadline of Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Similarly, the previous deadline of December 18, 2025 (Thursday) for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands has been moved to December 23, 2025 (Tuesday).

Uttar Pradesh, which initially had the latest deadline among the states, will now submit its SIR on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, instead of Friday, December 26, 2025.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa stated that the state had requested an extension from the ECI to ensure the SIR process could be completed systematically and with full accuracy. According to Rinwa, the additional time was sought so district election officials could thoroughly verify entries related to voters who had died, relocated, or were untraceable.

He added that the ECI has now issued updated timelines aligned with the eligibility cutoff date of January 1, 2026, granting Uttar Pradesh an additional 15 days for the Special Intensive Revision process.

Under the updated plan, the counting period will continue until December 26, 2025. Post this, the draft electoral rolls will be published on December 31, 2025. Citizens will be able to file claims and objections between December 31, 2025, and January 30, 2026.

Authorities will Scrutinize notices, verify enumeration forms, and process claims and objections from December 31, 2025, to February 21, 2026. The final electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh will now be published on February 28, 2026.

Earlier, on November 30, the ECI had extended the SIR deadlines by one week in 12 States and Union Territories to give voters additional time to verify and correct their entries ahead of upcoming elections.
