In a strange turn of events, a Haryana woman named Guniya – whose name remained on the voter list nearly two years after her death – was found to have her registration linked to a Brazilian model’s photograph. The discovery came shortly after congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleged widespread voter Fraud in the state’s electoral rolls.
According to an India Today Investigation, the voter record displaying the same foreign image was associated with Guniya, who had passed away in March 2022. The revelation occurred just a day after Gandhi claimed that a Brazilian model’s image appeared multiple times on Haryana’s official voter list.
Family Shocked by the Discovery
Guniya’s family was left stunned after learning that her voter entry was still active – and featured a photograph of a woman they had never seen. “We don’t know what has happened,” said her mother-in-law, showing reporters Guniya’s death certificate. The family confirmed that Guniya had cast her last vote before passing away, but they were clueless about how the image mix-up occurred.
Rahul Gandhi Alleges Massive Voter Fraud
At a press conference, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP and the Election Commission of enabling large-scale voter fraud ahead of the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections. He alleged that the photo of a Brazilian model had appeared repeatedly under various voter names such as Seema, Sweety, and Saraswati.
Gandhi claimed his team uncovered 25 lakh fake voter entries– nearly 12% of the state’s total electorate – and accused authorities of “systematically manipulating” the voter list. “Haryana has two crore voters, and 25 lakh of them are fake,” he asserted, calling it an attempt to “steal democracy.”
The Brazilian Model Responds: “It’s Not Me, Just My Photo”
Amid the growing controversy, the Brazilian model whose image sparked political turmoil has come forward. Identified as Larissa, she clarified in a video message that the picture was an old stock photo used without her consent.
“I am completely unrelated to Indian politics. My image was taken from a stock photo website and used without my permission. I’m a Brazilian digital influencer and hairdresser – I’ve never even been to India,” she explained.
Viral Reactions and Indian Fan Support
Following Rahul Gandhi’s press conference, Larissa’s social media platforms were flooded with messages from Indian users. “Thank you for visiting my Instagram, Indian fans! It seems I suddenly have a lot of Indian followers. People are commenting as if I’ve won something! But just to be clear – it was only my photo, not me,” she laughed.
She went on to express gratitude for the kindness shown by Indian followers. “I don’t understand your language, but I am truly thankful. You’ve all been very sweet and respectful,” Larissa added, emphasizing that she had no resemblance to an Indian woman and was surprised by the global attention.
Questions Raised on Election Integrity
This incident has reignited the debate over voter roll transparency and data integrity in India. Experts say that errors like mismatched photos and outdated entries expose flaws in voter list management, especially in the digital age.
As authorities probe the irregularities, the Haryana case stands as a reminder of the growing need for stronger verification systems to prevent identity misuse and misinformation during elections.
