A senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in punjab, Lucky Oberoi, was shot dead in a brazen daylight attack outside a Gurdwara Sahib in Jalandhar on Friday, sending shockwaves across the city and raising fresh concerns over Law and Order.
According to preliminary police reports, two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire at close range, hitting Oberoi with at least five bullets. The shooting occurred outside a Gurdwara Sahib in the densely populated Model Town area.
Police said Oberoi was seated inside his car at the time of the attack when the gunmen approached and fired multiple rounds before fleeing the scene.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival.
Senior police officials reached the spot shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area. A detailed forensic examination was carried out, and multiple teams have been formed to track down the attackers.
“We are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and questioning eyewitnesses. All possible angles, including personal rivalry and political motives, are being investigated,” a senior police officer said.
The incident has triggered panic among residents, with locals expressing fear over the audacity of the attack in a busy public area. Security has been tightened across Jalandhar, particularly in sensitive locations.
According to party sources, Lucky Oberoi was considered politically influential at the local level and was known to be close to Rajvinder Kaur Thiada, the AAP leader from the Cantt constituency.
Oberoi’s wife had earlier contested the local body Elections on an AAP ticket, though she was unsuccessful.
Police officials said more details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. “We are confident of making breakthroughs soon,” an officer added.
The killing has once again sparked a political debate in Punjab, with opposition parties questioning the state government over public safety and demanding swift justice.
