Adrian Birrell Appointed Sharjah Warriorz Head Coach for ILT20 Season 5

Adrian Birrell has been appointed head coach of Sharjah Warriorz ahead of the fifth season of the International League T20 (ILT20). The 65-year-old South African brings extensive international and franchise coaching experience to a side looking to revive its fortunes after a disappointing previous campaign.

Birrell is best known for his successful coaching spell with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, whom he guided to three SA20 titles. His appointment gives Sharjah Warriorz an experienced coach with a proven record of building competitive franchise teams and managing players in high-pressure T20 environments.

Adrian Birrell brings extensive coaching experience

Birrell’s coaching career stretches across international cricket and franchise leagues. He served as Ireland’s head coach from 2002 to 2007 and played an important role during a period when the team made significant progress on the international stage.

One of the highlights of his Ireland tenure came at the World Cup in the West Indies, where the team qualified for the Super Eight stage. The achievement represented an important milestone for Irish cricket and helped establish Birrell’s reputation as a coach capable of developing teams outside the traditional major cricketing nations.

He later joined the South African national setup, working as an assistant coach between 2013 and 2017. That experience gave him further exposure to elite international players and high-level cricket environments.

Three SA20 titles highlight Birrell’s franchise success

Birrell subsequently moved deeper into franchise cricket, where he enjoyed considerable success with Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Under his leadership, the franchise won the SA20 title three times.

That record is likely to be one of the biggest reasons Sharjah Warriorz have opted for Birrell as they look to change their fortunes in the ILT20. His experience of working within a successful franchise structure could prove valuable as the Warriorz attempt to build a more consistent squad.

Birrell is currently also involved in The Hundred, where he serves as head coach of Sunrisers Leeds in the women’s competition. His continued involvement in franchise cricket means he remains familiar with the demands of short-format tournaments.

Birrell outlines vision for Sharjah Warriorz

Following his appointment, Birrell expressed excitement about joining the Sharjah-based franchise and highlighted the importance of team culture, high standards and a winning mentality.

Sharjah Warriorz looking to bounce back

Birrell’s appointment comes at an important time for Sharjah Warriorz. The franchise finished at the bottom of the ILT20 standings during the 2025-26 season and is still searching for its first title in the competition.

The Warriorz will therefore enter the fifth ILT20 season with a clear objective of improving their overall performance. Bringing in a coach with Birrell’s franchise success could be an important part of that rebuilding process.

The fifth edition of the ILT20 is scheduled to take place from November 22 to December 20, with the tournament moving to an earlier window than its usual schedule.

Birrell’s playing career in South Africa

Before establishing himself as a coach, Birrell enjoyed a long domestic playing career in South Africa. He represented Eastern Province between the 1984-85 and 1997-98 seasons.

Across 45 first-class matches, Birrell scored 1,480 runs and also claimed 75 wickets with his legbreak bowling. His playing experience has added another layer to his coaching career, giving him an understanding of both the player and coaching perspectives.
