Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is approaching a decisive period in his career, with his contract situation still unresolved. Manager Andoni Iraola has made it clear that he wants the Brazilian to remain at Anfield, but admitted he does not know whether the goalkeeper will still be at the club next season.
Alisson is currently in the final year of his contract, and discussions between the player and Liverpool are ongoing. With interest from several clubs and the January transfer window approaching, the Reds face an important decision over the future of their first-choice goalkeeper.
Andoni Iraola hopes Alisson will extend his Liverpool stay
Speaking to the media, Iraola expressed his desire to keep Alisson at Anfield, highlighting the value the goalkeeper continues to bring to the team. However, he also acknowledged that the final decision rests with the player and the club.
The Liverpool manager was asked whether the current campaign could be Alisson’s final season with the Reds. He admitted that he could not provide a definite answer, while making his preference clear.
“I don’t know [if this will be Alisson’s last season], that is a question you have to ask him. I hope not, I hope he continues with us for more time. But, when you ask me about contracts and these situations, it is a matter for the players and the club. Yes we have continuous conversations with Julian but I cannot tell you everything. We talk between us.”
Iraola’s comments suggest that conversations are continuing behind the scenes, although no final decision about Alisson’s future has been announced. The manager remains hopeful that the goalkeeper will commit to staying at Liverpool for a longer period.
Alisson previously discussed his contract and future plans
Alisson had already spoken publicly about his contract situation in June 2025. At the time, he explained that he had one year remaining on his deal, along with an additional year available through a club option. He also expected Liverpool to activate that option.
“I have one year of contract left and one more year on a club option. They will probably exercise this option. I think about what I have in hand to do a great job. It’s a decisive moment in my career, when a World Cup is coming. I want to be very focused, I don’t want anything external to get in the way of that.”
The Brazilian also discussed his longer-term ambition to return to his former club, Internacional. He acknowledged that players who had returned to their previous clubs had experienced different outcomes, but said he remained interested in making that move when the time was right.
“I talk to athletes who have made this move to return, some have had good experiences, others not. Each one will have their own experience, but I want to return, especially to Inter [Internacional]. I don’t know when it will happen, but I still want to do it at a high level. That’s what I have planned.”
Those comments indicate that a return to Internacional remains part of Alisson’s future plans. However, he did not specify when he would like that move to happen, leaving open the possibility of continuing his career at Anfield beyond the current season.
Liverpool face a January deadline in Alisson’s contract situation
Liverpool could face increasing pressure to resolve the goalkeeper’s future before the end of the year. Under FIFA regulations, players entering the final six months of their contracts are permitted to negotiate with interested clubs from January 1, 2027.
That means Alisson will be free to discuss a potential move with other teams if his contract situation remains unresolved. For Liverpool, reaching an agreement before that date could be important if the club wants to avoid uncertainty surrounding one of its key players.
Alisson’s future remains open, with a new agreement at Anfield still a possibility. Iraola has expressed his hope that the Brazilian will stay, but the outcome will depend on discussions between the goalkeeper and the club.
Which clubs are interested in signing Alisson?
Several clubs have been linked with Alisson as questions continue over his Liverpool future. Juventus were reportedly interested in signing the goalkeeper during the 2026 summer transfer window, but they were unable to reach an agreement with Liverpool.
Juventus have since signed Vicario on loan from Tottenham, although their interest in Alisson has reportedly continued. The Italian club could therefore remain among the sides monitoring the Brazilian’s situation.
Inter Milan and Inter Miami also linked
Inter Milan and Inter Miami have also been mentioned as potential destinations for Alisson. Their reported interest adds to the uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper’s next move, particularly with his contract entering its final stages.
Saudi Pro League clubs monitoring the situation
Saudi Pro League sides are also reportedly interested in signing the Liverpool goalkeeper. However, no agreement with any interested club has been confirmed, and Alisson still has the option of extending his stay at Anfield.
For now, Liverpool’s priority will be to continue discussions with the Brazilian and determine whether a new agreement can be reached. Iraola has made his position clear: he wants Alisson to remain with the team. Whether that happens will become clearer as negotiations progress.
