Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed serious doubts about Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s international future, suggesting that the experienced fast bowler may have played his final match for the national team. Ashwin’s assessment follows Bhuvneshwar’s disappointing comeback in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, where he struggled to reproduce the form that made him one of the standout performers in IPL 2026.
Bhuvneshwar earned his return to the Indian T20I side after an impressive Indian Premier League campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, his performances against New Zealand were a significant contrast to his domestic success. The right-arm pacer managed only one wicket across the series and conceded runs at an economy rate of 11.50.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted the difference between Bhuvneshwar’s IPL performances and his international comeback. The former spinner questioned whether the 35-year-old could find a route back into the Indian team after such a difficult series.
Ashwin acknowledged that conditions may have influenced Bhuvneshwar’s bowling plans, particularly the boundary dimensions and the difficulty of using his usual fuller lengths to generate swing. However, he felt the pacer’s overall performance raised concerns beyond the runs and wickets.
Ravichandran Ashwin Questions Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s India Future
Ashwin was particularly concerned by how far Bhuvneshwar’s international performances had fallen below the standard he demonstrated during the IPL. The experienced pacer had returned to the national side with considerable expectations, but his comeback did not go according to plan.
The former India spinner suggested that the series could mark the end of Bhuvneshwar’s international career, although he did not present it as a confirmed decision by the selectors.
“Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t bowled that well; he didn’t prove his form,” Ashwin said.
He further explained that the difference between the pacer’s performances in the IPL and the New Zealand series was particularly noticeable.
“There was a night and day difference between his IPL form and here (New Zealand series). I think that chapter is maybe closed. It’s very difficult. How will he come back?” he added.
Ashwin’s comments have brought renewed attention to Bhuvneshwar’s international future. The pacer had spent several years as an important member of India’s white-ball attack, particularly because of his ability to swing the new ball and deliver accurate overs at the death.
However, his latest performances have raised questions about whether he can still deliver consistently at international level. With competition for places in India’s fast-bowling department, a disappointing comeback could make it difficult for him to secure another opportunity.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar Fails to Reproduce His IPL 2026 Form
Bhuvneshwar had made a strong case for an India return through his performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026. The experienced pacer enjoyed an excellent campaign, taking 28 wickets in 16 matches and establishing himself as one of the tournament’s most effective bowlers.
His ability to control the new ball, find movement and deliver important breakthroughs made him a valuable part of Bengaluru’s bowling attack. Those performances created expectations that he could bring similar effectiveness to India’s T20I side.
However, the New Zealand series proved to be a difficult assignment. Bhuvneshwar struggled to contain the opposition batters and failed to take regular wickets, with his first appearance setting the tone for a challenging comeback.
In the opening T20I, he conceded 49 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. It was an expensive outing for a bowler who had been so successful in the IPL just before his international return.
His second appearance brought his only wicket of the series, when he dismissed Daryl Mitchell. However, Bhuvneshwar still conceded 50 runs, meaning the breakthrough did little to improve his overall figures.
The third T20I brought another wicketless performance. He gave away 40 runs without managing to dismiss a New Zealand batter, continuing a difficult run throughout the series.
Bhuvneshwar missed the fourth match before returning for the final T20I. Unfortunately for the veteran pacer, his final outing also failed to produce a breakthrough, as he conceded 41 runs without taking a wicket.
He therefore finished the five-match series with just one wicket and an economy rate of 11.50. The numbers represented a sharp decline from his IPL performances and provided the basis for Ashwin’s concerns about his ability to return to his previous international level.
Boundary Dimensions and Bowling Lengths Added to Bhuvneshwar’s Challenge
The conditions in the New Zealand series may also have played a role in Bhuvneshwar’s struggles. The boundary distances reportedly made it more difficult for him to rely on the fuller lengths that have traditionally been an important part of his bowling approach.
Bhuvneshwar has built much of his reputation around swing bowling, particularly when the ball is new. His ability to pitch the ball up, move it through the air and challenge batters around the off stump has made him a difficult opponent in favourable conditions.
However, when those fuller deliveries become easier to attack because of the conditions or boundary dimensions, bowlers may need to adjust their lengths. Bhuvneshwar appeared to rely more on shorter deliveries during the series, but New Zealand’s batters were able to use those balls to score freely.
That adjustment did not produce the control or wicket-taking threat expected from the experienced Indian pacer. Instead, the opposition was able to attack him and maintain pressure on India’s bowling attack.
Although conditions can influence a bowler’s performance, Ashwin’s criticism suggested that he saw broader issues in Bhuvneshwar’s intensity and preparation. The former spinner was not convinced that the pacer had arrived in the series at his best physical and bowling level.
Ashwin Criticises Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Preparation and Bowling Intensity
Ashwin’s assessment went beyond Bhuvneshwar’s expensive figures and lack of wickets. He focused on the fast bowler’s run-up speed, overall intensity and bowling pace, suggesting that these aspects appeared different from what he had seen during the IPL.
According to Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar did not seem to carry the same energy into the international series that had made him so effective for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
“Leave performance, leave giving extra runs. It’s not that. What was disappointing, I felt the way he bowls in the IPL – the intensity, his run-up speed was lower, and his bowling speed was also lower. That tells me maybe he didn’t come in prime training form for this series,” Ashwin said.
The comments raised questions about whether Bhuvneshwar’s preparation before the series had been sufficient. Ashwin suggested that the difference in the pacer’s physical intensity was noticeable and may have affected his ability to execute his usual bowling plans.
For a fast bowler whose success depends heavily on control, movement and changes of pace, even a small drop in rhythm or intensity can make a difference. Bhuvneshwar’s difficulty in maintaining consistent lengths against New Zealand appeared to underline the problems identified by Ashwin.
However, Ashwin’s assessment remains his personal opinion. The series figures demonstrate that Bhuvneshwar struggled, but they do not confirm whether his preparation was the reason behind the decline or whether the selectors have made a final decision about his future.
Why Ashwin Believes Bhuvneshwar May Not Get Another Long Run
Ashwin also explained why Bhuvneshwar’s experience could make his situation more complicated than that of a younger player trying to establish a place in the national side.
In international cricket, selectors may sometimes give inexperienced players several opportunities to adjust to the demands of the highest level. A young fast bowler can be given time to learn, improve and demonstrate consistency. However, an established international player returning after a long absence is likely to face different expectations.
Ashwin suggested that selectors would naturally question whether Bhuvneshwar’s comeback performance justified another opportunity. The pacer already has considerable international experience, meaning he would be expected to make an immediate impact rather than require an extended period to settle into the side.
“If that’s the condition, the selectors will also think, ‘Is this the way’? If you’re a new kid or a young boy, you’ll get ten chances. But you’re an experienced guy coming back,” he added.
The former spinner’s argument reflects the competition for places in India’s bowling attack. With several fast bowlers competing for opportunities, selectors must consider both current form and the experience a player can bring to the team.
Bhuvneshwar’s IPL performances demonstrated that he could still deliver strong results in franchise cricket. However, his international comeback did not provide the same evidence of consistency, leaving questions about whether he can translate that form to the national side.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s International Career Faces an Uncertain Future
Bhuvneshwar last represented India in an international match in November 2022 before earning his return to the T20I side for the New Zealand series. His absence from the national team had lasted several years, making his comeback an important moment in his career.
During his time with India, he became one of the country’s leading white-ball fast bowlers. His ability to swing the ball in the early overs, maintain control and contribute during the death overs made him a regular option across formats, particularly in limited-overs cricket.
His experience and skill also helped him remain relevant in the IPL. The 28 wickets he collected for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 16 matches during the 2026 season demonstrated the impact he could still have in T20 cricket.
However, the contrast between that campaign and his performances against New Zealand has created fresh uncertainty. A single difficult series does not automatically end an international career, but the figures and Ashwin’s criticism have placed Bhuvneshwar’s future under renewed scrutiny.
The selectors will ultimately decide whether the veteran pacer receives another opportunity. His chances could depend on future performances, his fitness and the team’s requirements as India continue to assess their fast-bowling options.
Can Bhuvneshwar Kumar Make Another Comeback?
Bhuvneshwar’s latest T20I performances have certainly made his path back into the Indian team more difficult. His return had been built on an outstanding IPL campaign, but the New Zealand series exposed problems with his control, economy rate and ability to take wickets.
Ashwin believes that the chapter may be closed, pointing to the difference between the pacer’s domestic and international performances. He also questioned the intensity and preparation that Bhuvneshwar brought into the series, suggesting that these factors may have contributed to his struggles.
Nevertheless, the final decision on his international future remains with the selectors. Bhuvneshwar has previously demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level, and his IPL campaign showed that he can still be an effective T20 bowler.
For now, his difficult comeback has left his India career uncertain. Whether he can respond with stronger performances in the future or whether the New Zealand series proves to be his final international appearance remains to be seen.
