Bill Belichick is once again among the five coaching candidates advancing in the selection process for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2027. The legendary former New England Patriots head coach has been joined by Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan on the latest list announced Thursday by the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
All five coaches reached this stage of the process last year, when Belichick also advanced but failed to secure election in his first year of eligibility. His omission attracted significant criticism across the NFL, with former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady among those who publicly questioned the decision.
Belichick Returns to the Hall of Fame Coaching Candidates List
The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that Belichick and four other former head coaches have advanced from the initial group of 14 nominees. Members of the Hall’s coaching subcommittee reviewed the original field and selected the five candidates for further consideration.
The next step will see the coaching subcommittee select one candidate from the five names. That individual will then be considered by the Hall of Fame’s full selection committee as it determines the Class of 2027 in early 2027.
Belichick’s return to the shortlist comes after the controversy surrounding his unsuccessful first-year attempt. Despite his six Super Bowl victories as head coach of the Patriots, he was not elected during the previous selection cycle.
The decision drew strong reactions from former players, coaches and other figures across professional football. Many questioned how a coach with Belichick’s achievements could fail to receive first-ballot recognition.
Tom Brady Criticises Belichick’s Previous Snub
Tom Brady, who won six Super Bowls alongside Belichick in New England, was particularly critical of the decision not to elect his former coach in his first year of eligibility.
“If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous because people deserve it. He’s incredible,” Brady said.
Brady’s comments reflected the high regard in which Belichick is held by many people who worked with him during the Patriots’ successful era. Their partnership produced six Super Bowl championships and established New England as one of the NFL’s dominant teams.
Belichick’s achievements also include two Super Bowl titles as a defensive assistant with the New York Giants. His coaching career has therefore featured championship success both as a head coach and as an assistant.
Belichick’s Career Includes Championships and Controversy
Belichick’s legacy includes one of the most successful coaching records in NFL history, but his career was also marked by controversy. The most prominent example was the 2007 sign-stealing scandal known as “Spygate.”
The Patriots were caught filming defensive signals from the New York Jets during a game. The NFL fined Belichick $500,000 over the incident, which became a major controversy during New England’s championship era.
Belichick’s final season as the Patriots’ head coach came in 2023. He subsequently moved into college football and is now in his second season coaching at North Carolina.
His latest appearance among the Hall of Fame coaching candidates gives him another opportunity to advance through the selection process, although election is not guaranteed. The coaching subcommittee must still choose one of the five candidates for consideration by the full committee.
Tom Coughlin’s Super Bowl Success With the Giants
Tom Coughlin is also among the five coaches seeking a place in the Class of 2027. He won two Super Bowls as head coach of the New York Giants, defeating Belichick, Brady and the Patriots in both championship games.
Across 20 seasons with the Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars, Coughlin compiled a record of 182-157, including postseason games. He also won a Super Bowl as an assistant coach with the Giants.
His two victories over the Patriots gave his coaching career a particularly memorable place in NFL history. Both championships came against a New England team led by the coaching partnership of Belichick and Brady.
Mike Holmgren’s Championship Record
Mike Holmgren advanced alongside Belichick, Coughlin, Reeves and Shanahan. He led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl championship and recorded a combined 174-122 record, including postseason games, across 17 seasons with the Packers and Seattle Seahawks.
Holmgren also won two Super Bowls as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers. His career included championship success at different stages, first as part of the 49ers’ coaching staff and later as the head coach of Green Bay.
His record with both the Packers and Seahawks has made him one of the five candidates under consideration for the coaching position in the 2027 Hall of Fame class.
Dan Reeves Reached Four Super Bowls as a Head Coach
Dan Reeves is another candidate with an extensive NFL coaching record. Across 23 seasons with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons, he recorded 201 wins, 174 losses and two ties.
Reeves led teams to the Super Bowl four times as a head coach. The Broncos reached the championship game on three occasions, while the Falcons made one appearance. His teams finished with a 0-4 record across those four Super Bowl appearances.
He also won a Super Bowl as an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys, adding another championship achievement to his coaching career.
Mike Shanahan’s Back-to-Back Super Bowl Titles
Mike Shanahan completes the five-coach shortlist. He guided the Denver Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl championships and finished with a 178-144 record across 20 seasons with the Broncos and Washington Redskins.
Before establishing himself as a successful head coach, Shanahan also won a Super Bowl as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers. His back-to-back titles in Denver remain the central achievement of his head coaching career.
Shanahan’s record and championship history have placed him alongside four other accomplished coaches in the latest stage of the Hall of Fame selection process.
Five Contributor Candidates Also Advance
The Hall of Fame’s coaching announcement followed the release of its five contributor candidates on Wednesday. The names advancing in that category are Ralph Hay, Robert Kraft, Virginia McCaskey, Doug Williams and John Wooten.
The final group of 15 candidates for the Class of 2027 will include one contributor, one coach and 13 modern-era players. The selection process will then narrow the field to 10 candidates before reducing it further to seven.
This structure means that only one coaching candidate will remain in contention for the final selection committee’s consideration. The other four will not advance as coaching nominees in this cycle.
How the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Process Works
Once the final seven candidates have been identified, a 25-member selection committee will vote on the potential Hall of Fame class. Each committee member will be able to vote for six candidates.
A candidate must receive support from at least 80% of the committee to earn election. The Hall of Fame has said this voting structure will produce between three and seven new members each year.
According to the Hall, five or six inductees are the most likely outcomes under the system. The final number will depend on how many candidates reach the required support level.
Class of 2027 Announcement and Induction Dates
The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2027 will be announced during NFL Honors in Los Angeles in February. The selected inductees will then be formally enshrined at the Hall of Fame in Canton next August.
For Belichick, the latest shortlist represents another stage in his pursuit of football’s highest individual coaching recognition. His six Super Bowl victories with New England, two additional championships as a Giants assistant and long record of success make his candidacy one of the major talking points in the 2027 selection process.
However, he must first emerge as the coaching subcommittee’s choice before reaching the full selection committee. With Coughlin, Holmgren, Reeves and Shanahan also advancing, the coaching category remains competitive as the Hall of Fame moves closer to finalising its next class.
