Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign remains alive after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Round of 32, but the performance raised fresh concerns about whether Roberto Martinez‘s side can go much further in the tournament.
While Cristiano Ronaldo finally broke his World Cup knockout-stage scoring drought and Goncalo Ramos delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner, Portugal were far from convincing against a determined Croatian side that came within inches of forcing extra time.
The victory secured Portugal’s place in the Round of 16, where they will now face tournament favorites Spain in what promises to be one of the biggest matches of FIFA World Cup 2026.
Portugal Escape After Croatia Push Them To The Limit
Croatia looked capable of producing a major upset after veteran winger Ivan Perisic opened the scoring early in the second half. Portugal struggled to create clear opportunities and frequently looked short of ideas in the final third.
Ronaldo eventually brought Portugal level from the penalty spot in the 68th minute after a foul on Renato Veiga inside the box. The goal was historic, marking the first knockout-stage strike of Ronaldo’s World Cup career.
However, the equalizer did little to hide Portugal’s attacking issues. Croatia remained organized defensively and continued to frustrate the Portuguese attack throughout the contest.
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Rafael Leao delivered a pinpoint cross that was headed home by substitute Goncalo Ramos, sending Portuguese fans into celebration.
Ronaldo Makes History But Struggles In Open Play
Although Ronaldo was named Player of the Match, his overall display generated mixed reactions. The 41-year-old converted his penalty with trademark composure but found it difficult to influence the game from open play.
He missed an early opportunity after failing to connect with a dangerous cross from Pedro Neto and later saw a free-kick blocked by the Croatian wall.
Statistics highlighted his limited involvement. Ronaldo failed to register a touch inside Croatia’s penalty area during the first half and finished the match with only one touch inside the box—the penalty that resulted in his goal.
Croatia’s disciplined defensive structure successfully isolated the veteran striker, forcing Portugal to rely on wide attacks and individual moments of quality rather than sustained offensive pressure.
Rafael Leao Provides Portugal’s Biggest Threat
While Ronaldo struggled to find space, Rafael Leao emerged as Portugal’s most dangerous attacking player.
The AC Milan star repeatedly attacked defenders with pace and direct running, creating several promising situations. His willingness to take on defenders provided Portugal with an attacking dimension that was often missing elsewhere.
Leao’s influence ultimately proved decisive when he supplied the stoppage-time cross that Ramos converted for the winning goal.
His performance offered Portugal encouragement ahead of the Spain clash, especially given the lack of creativity displayed by several other attacking players.
Martinez’s Bold Gamble Pays Off
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez made the surprising decision to substitute Ronaldo in the 81st minute with the score tied at 1-1.
The move was viewed as a major gamble given Ronaldo’s reputation for delivering in crucial moments. However, Martinez’s tactical adjustment eventually worked.
The introduction of Goncalo Ramos gave Portugal a different attacking profile, while Ruben Neves helped stabilize the midfield during the closing stages.
Ramos justified the coach’s decision by scoring the winner and ensuring Portugal avoided the uncertainty of extra time and penalties.
Spain Present A Much Bigger Challenge
Portugal’s victory over Croatia may have secured progression, but Spain will present a completely different level of difficulty.
The Spanish side have been among the tournament’s standout performers and remain unbeaten while boasting one of the strongest defensive records in the competition.
Unlike Croatia, Spain possess greater attacking depth, superior ball control, and the ability to dominate possession for extended periods.
If Portugal produce a similar performance against Spain, they may not be fortunate enough to escape with a victory.
Can Ronaldo Deliver Again?
The spotlight will once again fall on Ronaldo as he prepares for another defining World Cup encounter.
While his penalty against Croatia created history, Portugal will require significantly more from their captain against Spain. The veteran forward will need greater involvement in open play, sharper movement inside the box, and stronger connections with Portugal’s creative midfielders.
Martinez may also need to reconsider his team selection after surprising many by limiting the influence of creative stars such as Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha during key moments against Croatia.
Portugal remain alive in the tournament, but their narrow escape against Croatia served as a warning. Spain are unlikely to offer the same opportunities for recovery. If Ronaldo wants to keep his World Cup dream alive, both he and Portugal must raise their level considerably in the next round.
