Devdutt Padikkal Reveals Struggle Behind Maiden Test Century in Galle

Devdutt Padikkal produced a memorable performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, scoring his maiden Test century and helping India gain a strong advantage on Day 1.

The left-handed batter from Karnataka displayed excellent composure throughout his innings, combining controlled aggression with patience against Sri Lanka’s pace and spin attack. His century came after he had already scored a ton in India’s warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI.

Padikkal reveals the biggest challenge during his century

Speaking after the day’s play, Padikkal revealed that the biggest challenge was not only the pitch but also the physically demanding conditions in Galle. The intense heat and humidity left the players constantly sweating and losing fluids.

Padikkal explained that maintaining concentration while dealing with tiredness became particularly important during the third session.

“In this knock, determination for me was playing through that tiredness and fatigue that I was feeling, especially towards the third session.”

The 26-year-old batter admitted that the conditions became increasingly difficult as the day progressed, making it important for him to remain disciplined at the crease.

“It was getting really hot, and we were losing a lot of fluid. We were sweating all the time.”

Padikkal stresses discipline on a challenging Galle pitch

Padikkal also highlighted the difficulty of batting on the Galle surface. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, he believed India’s batters needed to remain focused and avoid playing overly ambitious shots.

According to Padikkal, fatigue can make it easier for batters to lose discipline, but India managed to maintain their concentration throughout the opening day.

“It wasn’t the easiest of wickets to bat on. I think we had to make sure that we didn’t play too many last shots.”

His ability to stay patient against Sri Lanka’s spinners, particularly Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha, played a major role in his successful innings.

Maiden Test century strengthens Padikkal’s case at No. 3

Padikkal’s century could have major implications for India’s batting combination in the upcoming matches. He entered the playing XI after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out through injury, but his latest performance has strengthened his claim for the No. 3 position.

Before the Test, Padikkal had already shown promising form by scoring a century in the warm-up game. He followed that performance with a much more significant hundred against Sri Lanka when India needed stability after an early wicket.

The back-to-back centuries provide Padikkal with considerable momentum and could make the selection decision more complicated if Sudharsan returns to fitness.
