David Moyes praised Everton’s performance after his side secured a second consecutive victory over Newcastle United with a 1-0 Premier League win at St James’ Park on Monday. The Everton manager described the result as a major achievement, insisting that defeating the same opponent twice within four days was “not an easy thing” at the highest level of Football.
Everton had already beaten Newcastle 3-1 in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup just four days earlier. Moyes’ team followed that result with another disciplined display on Tyneside, collecting all three Premier League points and ending their three-game winless run in the competition.
Thierno Barry scored the decisive goal shortly after half-time, reacting quickly to a rebound after Tyrique George’s effort slipped underneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček. The victory moved Everton into seventh place in the Premier League standings and also gave them their first away win in the league campaign.
David Moyes calls Everton’s second Newcastle win a great result
Moyes was delighted with Everton’s ability to overcome Newcastle for the second time in four days. The Toffees had already secured a 3-1 victory in the Carabao Cup, but repeating that success in a Premier League fixture at St James’ Park presented a different challenge.
The Everton manager praised his players for their commitment and determination, highlighting the effort they have continued to show despite a difficult period.
“They are so good in what they do as they give everything they’ve got,” Moyes said.
He also described the squad as a brilliant group of players who remained determined to keep winning and compete in every match.
“They’re a brilliant group of players and they’ve had it tough as well. They want to keep winning and they’ve found it difficult with the way things have gone, but they’re pulling it out and doing their best to be in all the games.”
Moyes emphasised how difficult it is for any team to defeat the same Premier League opponent twice in such a short period.
“It’s never easy … we beat Newcastle on Thursday night and to beat them again today is not an easy thing to do for any club and this level.
“To come here and get a good win tonight was a great result for us.”
The result was particularly important for Everton because it ended their three-match winless run in the Premier League. It also provided a confidence boost after the team’s recent difficulties in turning performances into victories.
Thierno Barry scores decisive goal after Tyrique George’s effort
The match began with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Everton and Newcastle were unable to find a breakthrough during a first half that lacked major scoring chances.
However, the visitors needed only four minutes after the restart to take the lead. Tyrique George produced a low effort that squeezed underneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, leaving the ball loose in a dangerous area.
Barry reacted quickly and reached the rebound before the Newcastle defence could recover, stabbing the ball into the net for his fourth Premier League goal of the campaign.
The goal proved decisive as Everton protected their advantage for the remainder of the match. Their defensive organisation prevented Newcastle from finding an equaliser, allowing Moyes’ side to leave St James’ Park with all three points.
Barry’s contribution also continued his productive campaign in front of goal, while George played an important role in creating the opportunity that led to the winner.
Everton secure first away Premier League win of the campaign
Alongside the importance of beating Newcastle again, Moyes was particularly pleased that Everton finally secured their first away victory in the Premier League this season.
The manager acknowledged that his team had produced some encouraging performances on the road and collected draws in difficult away fixtures, but had previously been unable to turn those results into wins.
“We’ve actually done quite well in some of the games getting draws in difficult away games, but we’ve not picked up a victory and last season we had a great run of results away from home.”
Moyes had hoped the trip to Newcastle would provide an opportunity to improve that record, and his players delivered the result he wanted.
“So I was hoping to pick it up tonight and thankfully we did, clean sheet and got the goal that counted.”
The clean sheet was another positive for Everton, who combined defensive discipline with the clinical finish needed to secure victory. The three points moved the Toffees into seventh place in the Premier League table and ended their recent run without a league win.
Matthias Jaissle admits Newcastle must improve after defeat
Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle was disappointed with his team’s performance and admitted that the Magpies needed to improve several aspects of their game. Newcastle struggled to create sustained attacking pressure and were unable to find a way past Everton’s defence.
The defeat left Newcastle 13th in the Premier League standings. Their frustration increased in the closing stages when Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards in quick succession and was sent off.
Speaking after the match, Jaissle said Newcastle would need to analyse the performance carefully and accepted responsibility for the team’s display as manager.
“We need to analyse that now in detail.
“It’s also clear that I have the responsibility and I also take that as the manager of this club, and we need to do things better.”
Jaissle said the problems were not limited to Newcastle’s performance in possession. He was also unhappy with the team’s organisation when attempting to defend and press Everton.
“There were many things there, not only in possession, which was not on the level we expected to see.”
The Newcastle manager explained that his team had intended to press Everton high up the pitch and force them into difficult situations. If that approach was bypassed, the players were expected to retreat into a compact defensive shape.
“Also out of possession, we wanted to press them high, we wanted to stretch them as soon as possible and make also a clear distinction if that was overplayed from their position that we defend in a compact block, but nothing between.
“Again, it was not much seen today on the pitch.”
His comments reflected Newcastle’s difficulties in carrying out the intended tactical plan. The Magpies struggled to threaten Everton consistently, while the visitors remained organised and defended their second-half lead.
Everton move seventh as Newcastle remain 13th
The 1-0 victory gave Everton three important Premier League points and lifted them into seventh place in the standings. It also ended their three-game winless run and delivered their first away league victory of the campaign.
For Moyes, beating Newcastle twice in four days was a significant achievement and a sign of the commitment shown by his players. The manager praised the squad’s determination, while the clean sheet and Barry’s winning goal provided the foundation for another positive result.
Newcastle, meanwhile, were left to reflect on a disappointing performance. Jaissle acknowledged that his side had fallen below the expected standard both with and without possession, while Ramsey’s late dismissal added to the frustration.
Everton will take confidence from their consecutive victories over the Magpies, while Newcastle must address the issues identified by their manager as they look to respond to the defeat.
