India’s teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to make his highly anticipated T20I debut during the upcoming series against Ireland, and the hosts have already begun preparing for the challenge posed by the explosive opener.
Ireland left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys has admitted that the 15-year-old’s fearless batting has caught the attention of bowlers around the world. However, the young spinner believes proper research and tactical planning can help Ireland counter the rising star.
“Opening the bowling, you’re taking on the best guys in cricket. The expectation in T20I cricket is you’re going to get hit for six, so there’s less pressure on the bowler,” Humphreys told BBC Sport NI.
“Sooryavanshi has put his name out there as one of the most explosive guys at the top of the order and has taken some big names by hitting them for six in the IPL. It’s about doing your research and working out a plan for him.”
Sooryavanshi Arrives in Ireland on the Back of Historic Form
The teenage sensation heads into the series brimming with confidence after producing a record-breaking performance in the One-Day Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka A.
Sooryavanshi smashed a breathtaking 94 runs off just 29 balls and registered the fastest century in List A cricket history, reaching the milestone in only 11 deliveries. The innings further strengthened his reputation as one of the most exciting young batters in world cricket.
His fearless approach was also on display during IPL 2026, where he consistently attacked experienced international bowlers and emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.
Humphreys Brings Strong T20I Record Into the Series
While much of the spotlight will be on Sooryavanshi, Humphreys has quietly established himself as one of Ireland’s most promising white-ball bowlers.
The 23-year-old has played 18 T20 Internationals and claimed 25 wickets at an impressive average of 18.56. He also boasts two four-wicket hauls and maintains an economy rate below seven runs per over.
Interestingly, left-arm spin versus left-handed batting is expected to be one of the key matchups of the series. However, recent evidence suggests Sooryavanshi has shown occasional vulnerability against off-spin and slower deliveries bowled into the pitch.
Ireland Handed Injury Blow Ahead of India Series
Ireland enter the series with a depleted squad due to multiple injuries. Regular captain Paul Stirling, along with Josh Little, Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Barry McCarthy and Jordan Neill, are all unavailable.
Wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker will lead the side despite having limited captaincy experience in T20 internationals.
The hosts are also expected to hand debuts to several youngsters, including Reuben Wilson, Jai Moondra, Matt Hollard and Gavin Hoey, making the series a valuable opportunity for Ireland’s next generation against a strong Indian side.
