LeBron James Trolled After Layup Blunders Against Celtics

LeBron James became a target of criticism on social media during Friday’s matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. After failing to convert two easy opportunities near the basket in quick succession, the NBA superstar faced a wave of reactions from fans questioning his explosiveness.

Midway through the second quarter, James collected a defensive rebound and drove the ball coast to coast with plenty of space ahead of him. However, he lost control while gathering for a layup and turned the ball over. Just two possessions later, he committed another turnover after failing to handle Tyrese Maxey’s pass directly under the basket.

The back-to-back mistakes quickly caught fans’ attention online. Some used the missed opportunities to question whether James, now in the later stages of his career, has lost some of the athleticism that once made him one of the NBA’s most dominant players.

“Without his explosiveness Bron has become bronny,” @beeobee10 said.

Despite the two costly moments, James delivered a solid all-around performance in Philadelphia’s 125-120 overtime loss. He played 24 minutes and 42 seconds, recording eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

LeBron James Faces Criticism After Missed Layups

James’ mistakes became a talking point among NBA fans, with social media users focusing on his struggles around the rim. The criticism reflected the high expectations that have followed the veteran throughout his career, particularly given his reputation for explosive drives, powerful finishes and exceptional control of the basketball.

However, the two turnovers represented only a small part of his overall performance. James continued to contribute as a rebounder and playmaker, finishing the game with seven assists and eight boards despite the 76ers’ overtime defeat.

The reaction also highlighted how closely fans monitor the four-time NBA champion, whose every performance is often judged against the extraordinary standards he established during his prime.

LeBron James’ Move to Philadelphia Under Investigation

Separately, James has faced scrutiny following reports about Fanatics’ involvement in his move to Philadelphia. To make the commute between Philadelphia and New York, where he is reportedly living, more convenient, James has allegedly been using a helicopter instead of travelling by car. The arrangement reportedly reduces his travel time from approximately two hours to around 30 minutes.

The reported helicopter connection to Fanatics has attracted attention because James signed a deal with the company in 2024. Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin was also previously a minority owner of the Philadelphia 76ers before selling his stake.

The circumstances have prompted questions and speculation among some fans and observers about whether James is receiving benefits beyond the terms of his contractual arrangements. However, speculation alone does not establish that any improper benefits have been provided.

Sports journalist Pablo Torre has said he plans to investigate the situation, bringing further attention to the reported connection between James, Fanatics and the Philadelphia franchise.

What’s Next for LeBron James and the 76ers?

While James continues to attract attention for his on-court performances, the discussion surrounding his reported travel arrangements has added another storyline to his connection with Philadelphia. His performance against the Celtics, meanwhile, demonstrated that he remained involved in multiple aspects of the game despite the missed layups and turnovers.

For NBA fans, the combination of his high-profile status, expectations of elite athleticism and off-court headlines means that even a pair of mistakes can quickly become a major social media talking point.
