Manvinder Bisla has strongly disagreed with the idea of Manav Suthar replacing Ravindra Jadeja in India’s Test team after the young left-arm spinner produced a stunning performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Suthar claimed his maiden 10-wicket haul in Test Cricket as India secured a comprehensive 165-run victory and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. His performance immediately led to comparisons with Jadeja, but Bisla believes it is far too early to talk about replacing an established Indian legend.
The former Kolkata Knight Riders wicketkeeper argued that one outstanding performance should not result in a senior player’s position being questioned. According to Bisla, building a successful team requires developing young players alongside experienced stars rather than constantly searching for replacements.
Bisla Says “That’s Not How a Team Is Made”
Manvinder Bisla addressed the debate in a video shared on Instagram, questioning the suggestion that Suthar should take Jadeja’s place following his 10-wicket performance.
“Will Manav Suthar become Ravindra Jadeja’s replacement after taking 10 wickets in the first Test? Aise team nahi banti (That’s not how a team is made). It’s totally wrong, according to me,” Bisla said.
He emphasized Jadeja’s importance to Indian Cricket and criticized the tendency to look for replacements after only one or two matches.
“Ravindra Jadeja is our legend. We have this habit of replacing players after one or two matches; that’s not how you make a team,” he added.
Manav Suthar Has Made a Dream Start to Test Cricket
There is little doubt that Manav Suthar has made an impressive beginning to his international career.
The 24-year-old left-arm spinner made his Test debut against Afghanistan earlier this year. He followed that appearance with a remarkable performance against Sri Lanka, taking 10 wickets in the first Test.
Suthar has now collected 17 wickets from his first two Test matches, giving India another promising option in the spin department.
His performance in Galle demonstrated his ability to operate effectively over long spells and create pressure on opposition batters. However, Bisla believes the youngster should be viewed as an additional asset rather than an immediate replacement for Jadeja.
Bisla Wants Suthar to Learn From Jadeja
Rather than separating Suthar from Jadeja, Bisla believes India’s young spinner could benefit significantly from playing alongside the experienced all-rounder.
Jadeja’s experience in international Test cricket could provide Suthar with valuable knowledge about bowling in different conditions, managing long spells and adapting to changing match situations.
“Manav Suthar took 10 wickets in this Test. It is possible that Ravindra Jadeja takes 10 wickets in the next Test,” Bisla said.
He added that Suthar could gain considerably by sharing the dressing room and bowling alongside Jadeja.
“I feel that Manav Suthar will get more help if he plays alongside Ravindra Jadeja. He will benefit from sharing the dressing room and bowling with him,” Bisla explained.
Ravindra Jadeja’s Record Makes Him Difficult to Replace
Bisla also highlighted Jadeja’s extraordinary record in Test cricket as evidence of why India should not rush to replace him.
Jadeja has established himself as one of India’s most valuable all-rounders, contributing consistently with both bat and ball over a long international career.
“Ravindra Jadeja has 350 wickets and 4000 runs in Tests. Can you replace such a player? Yes, you can get better by playing with him,” Bisla stated.
The argument reflects the difference between developing a potential successor and replacing an established superstar. Suthar can continue growing while learning from Jadeja, potentially giving India greater depth in the future.
Jadeja’s Recent Performance Against Sri Lanka
Jadeja returned to India’s Test team after missing the Afghanistan Test. His contribution with the ball was steady, as he picked up four wickets across Sri Lanka’s two innings.
However, his batting returns were modest, with scores of 13 and nine. Suthar’s 10-wicket performance consequently attracted greater attention and sparked discussion about India’s future combination.
Despite Suthar’s impressive showing, India’s management now has the luxury of having two quality left-arm spin options rather than necessarily needing to choose one over the other.
India Take 1-0 Lead Against Sri Lanka
India began the two-match Test series with a convincing 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle.
Suthar’s 10-wicket haul played a major role in India’s success, while the overall team performance allowed India to take an early advantage in the series.
The second Test is scheduled to begin at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Sunday, August 23.
Suthar and Jadeja Could Become an Important Spin Combination
Rather than viewing Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja as competitors for one position, India’s team management could potentially benefit from having both players available.
Suthar’s emergence provides India with another high-quality spin option, while Jadeja’s experience, batting ability and proven record continue to make him an important part of the Test setup.
Bisla’s comments underline the importance of patience when developing young players. Suthar’s 10-wicket haul is a major achievement, but establishing a long-term international career requires consistency across different opponents and conditions.
For now, India’s best approach may be to allow Suthar to learn from Jadeja while continuing to develop his own identity as an international cricketer. If both players perform consistently, India could have an extremely valuable combination at their disposal for the years ahead.
