WWE encouraged Nia Jax to embrace what made her different rather than change her appearance to fit into the traditional image of a women’s wrestler. The former WWE Women’s Champion recently revealed that coaches recognised her unique physical presence during her tryout and advised her to build her wrestling style around her natural strengths.

Jax, widely known as The Irresistible Force, has established herself as one of the most physically imposing performers in WWE’s women’s division. Throughout her career, she has competed under different creative regimes, won multiple championships and developed an identity built around her size, strength and dominant in-ring presence.

Speaking on the Keep It Aloha Podcast, Jax reflected on her early WWE tryout and explained how experienced coaches helped her understand the qualities that made her stand out. Instead of asking her to change her body or become similar to other female performers, they encouraged her to embrace her individuality.

Nia Jax reveals WWE coaches encouraged her to embrace her uniqueness

Jax credited Joey Mercury, Billy Gunn and Sara Amato among the coaches who played important roles in her development. According to the former champion, they recognised that her stature offered something different to the women’s division and wanted her to use that advantage inside the ring.

“The coaches there that saw me, like Joey Mercury, Billy Gunn, Sara Amato, were like three of my biggest coaches, best coaches. They were like, ‘No, you’re unique. Like, you’re different. You know, there’s nobody like you.’ And so they were big on making sure that I worked for my size. And it is, if you as a casual fan watching, like if you just watch a bigger girl come out against a smaller girl, you’re already be like, ‘Oh!’ It’s already like an attraction, where like, ‘Oh, she’s gonna get eaten alive.’ It’s just it’s part of the entertainment thing,” Jax said.

Her comments highlight how WWE viewed her physical presence as an important part of her character. Rather than trying to make her fit an existing mould, the coaches wanted her to develop a wrestling style that suited her build and allowed her to stand apart from the rest of the roster.

Jax also explained that the contrast between a larger competitor and a smaller opponent could immediately create interest for viewers. That difference in appearance and physical strength helped establish the foundation of her presentation as a dominant powerhouse.

Nia Jax initially believed she needed to lose weight

Before receiving that encouragement, Jax admitted that she had concerns about whether her appearance would fit WWE’s expectations. Like many aspiring performers entering a major wrestling promotion, she initially believed she needed to make significant changes to meet the company’s standards.

However, her coaches gave her a different message. They did not ask her to lose weight or change her natural appearance. Instead, they reassured her that her physical characteristics were part of what made her special as a performer.

“So I had that leg up that I didn’t realize when I first came in. I was like, ‘Oh no, I gotta lose all this weight. I gotta be this. I gotta be that.’ But they were like, ‘No.’ Not once did they ever tell me you gotta lose weight. They were like, ‘No, you’re perfect. We love this. This is the way you are,” Jax said.

The former champion’s experience demonstrates the importance of developing an individual identity in professional wrestling. Performers do not necessarily need to share the same appearance, athletic style or character presentation to connect with an audience.

For Jax, the advice helped her recognise that her size could become one of her biggest advantages. Instead of treating it as something she needed to change, she learned to incorporate it into her character and in-ring approach.

How Nia Jax built The Irresistible Force character in WWE

Jax’s physical presence became a defining feature of her WWE career. Her nickname, The Irresistible Force, reflected the powerful character she developed, with her matches frequently built around strength advantages, impactful moves and the challenge smaller opponents faced when trying to overcome her.

Her presentation also gave WWE a different kind of performer in the women’s division. While technical ability, speed and athleticism are important elements of professional wrestling, Jax’s character relied heavily on power and physical dominance.

Over the years, she established herself as a major championship contender and became a multi-time titleholder. Her success demonstrated how a distinctive presentation could become an important part of a wrestler’s connection with the audience.

Her career has not been without criticism or setbacks, but Jax has continued to occupy a prominent position in WWE programming. Her recent podcast appearance offers a look at the coaching philosophy that helped shape her identity before she became an established name in the company.

Nia Jax and Lash Legend formed The Irresistible Forces

Jax’s more recent WWE run also saw her develop a partnership with Lash Legend on SmackDown. The two formed a powerhouse tag team known as The Irresistible Forces, combining their physical strength and imposing presence in the women’s tag team division.

The partnership quickly became a championship-winning combination. Jax and Legend captured the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship from Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY ahead of Elimination Chamber 2026, giving the newly formed team an opportunity to establish itself among the division’s leading contenders.

Their championship victory marked another significant moment in Jax’s career. After spending much of her time as a singles competitor, she had found success alongside Legend, with their shared powerhouse presentation making them a difficult challenge for opposing teams.

The Irresistible Forces entered WrestleMania 42 as champions

Jax and Legend carried their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship reign into WrestleMania 42. However, their time as champions came to an end during the event after they lost the titles in a Fatal 4-Way tag team match.

Brie Bella and Paige emerged victorious, capturing the championship and ending The Irresistible Forces’ reign. The result prevented Jax and Legend from leaving WrestleMania with their titles, although their partnership remained part of the women’s tag team picture afterward.

For Jax, the match represented another major WrestleMania appearance in a career that has included several championship opportunities and high-profile rivalries. Her position in the women’s division continued to be important even after the title loss.

Nia Jax failed to win the title from Chelsea Green

Following WrestleMania 42, Jax and Legend continued their partnership on the blue brand. However, Jax also remained involved in the singles division and pursued another championship opportunity.

She attempted to win the title from Chelsea Green but was unable to secure the championship. The setback meant Jax did not immediately add another singles title to her collection, leaving her with more work to do if she wants to return to the top of the division.

Her recent comments about WWE’s early encouragement provide useful context for understanding the character she has maintained throughout her career. The company recognised that her physical presence offered something different and encouraged her to develop that identity rather than imitate other performers.

WWE’s early belief helped Nia Jax develop her own identity

Jax’s story is a reminder that professional wrestling depends on a variety of characters and performance styles. A roster made up entirely of similar-looking competitors with identical approaches would offer fewer contrasts for audiences to enjoy.

By encouraging Jax to work with her natural strengths, coaches such as Joey Mercury, Billy Gunn and Sara Amato helped her find a distinctive place in WWE. Her size became central to her presentation, while her development as a performer allowed her to compete for major championships and remain a recognised name in the women’s division.

Her message from the Keep It Aloha Podcast is particularly clear: she once thought she needed to change to fit WWE, but the people coaching her saw value in what already made her different. Their advice helped her understand that she did not need to become another version of someone else to build a successful wrestling career.
