Pat Cummins Reacts to Australia’s Historic Nine-Wicket Defeat Against Bangladesh

Pat Cummins admitted that Australia were thoroughly outplayed by bangladesh after suffering a historic nine-wicket defeat in the first Test at Darwin on August 16, 2026.

Reflecting on the disappointing result, Cummins identified Australia’s first-innings batting performance as one of the major reasons behind the defeat. The Australian captain acknowledged that his team failed to make the most of the conditions and did not score enough runs to put Bangladesh under pressure.

“Got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then just couldn’t penetrate with the ball. I think they outplayed us in all facets, really,” Cummins said after the match.

Australia were unable to recover after Bangladesh seized control of the game. The visitors showed greater discipline with both bat and ball and consistently kept the pressure on the hosts.

The historic victory also provided a major boost to Bangladesh’s campaign in the World Test Championship 2025-27. Their points percentage increased from 58.33 to 66.67 following the win.

Australia remain at the top of the WTC standings, but their points percentage dropped from 87.50 to 77.77 after the defeat. South Africa and New Zealand continue to occupy the second and third positions respectively.

India remain fifth with a points percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka are currently sixth with 41.67.

Australia face crucial second Test

Australia will now have to regroup before the second Test against Bangladesh. The next match is scheduled to begin at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena on August 22.

For Cummins and his team, the second Test represents an opportunity to respond after one of the most disappointing home defeats of the current World Test Championship cycle. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will enter the match with confidence after achieving a landmark victory in Darwin.
