India A opener Sai Sudharsan produced another outstanding red-ball performance, scoring his ninth first-class century on Day 1 of the unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A at the Galle International Stadium on June 25. The left-handed batter followed up his impressive 81-run knock against Afghanistan in the recent one-off Test with a composed century that put India A in a commanding position.

After captain Dhruv Jurel won the toss and elected to bat, Sudharsan opened alongside Ayush Pandey. The pair provided a solid foundation, adding 82 runs for the first wicket. Sudharsan reached his half-century off 69 deliveries before Ayush Pandey was dismissed for 25 by spinner Dilum Sudeera just before lunch.

Padikkal and Gaikwad Unable to Capitalise

Following the lunch break, Devdutt Padikkal looked positive at the crease and struck both a boundary and a six. However, his stay was cut short as Sudeera claimed his second wicket of the innings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad then joined Sudharsan in the middle and the duo attempted to build another partnership. Gaikwad showed promise but failed to convert his start into a significant score. He was trapped LBW by Ravindu Fernando on the very first ball of the 46th over after scoring 22 runs from 53 deliveries.

Meanwhile, Sudharsan continued to dominate the Sri Lankan bowling attack and reached his century in style, bringing up the milestone in just 130 balls. By tea, India A had strengthened their position, reaching 199/3 in 49 overs.

Sudharsan’s Magnificent 132 Ends After Century

The 24-year-old eventually fell for a superb 132 off 175 deliveries. His innings featured 19 boundaries and showcased excellent control against both pace and spin. Chamika Gunasekara ended Sudharsan’s stay at the crease in the 53rd over.

The century further strengthened Sudharsan’s case as one of India’s most promising red-ball batters. With India’s long-term search for a reliable No. 3 batter continuing, the youngster once again demonstrated his ability to perform in challenging overseas conditions.

Positive Signs Ahead of Sri Lanka Test Series

Sudharsan’s century comes at an important time for Indian cricket. The team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, has continued to back the left-hander despite intense competition for places in the batting order.

His ability to score heavily on spin-friendly Sri Lankan pitches will be encouraging for India ahead of their upcoming World Test Championship campaign. India are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in a two-Test series in August and will be aiming to improve their position in the WTC standings.

While Sudharsan enhanced his reputation with another impressive century, Padikkal and Gaikwad missed valuable opportunities to make a stronger statement. Nevertheless, India A ended the day in a strong position thanks largely to Sudharsan’s outstanding knock.
