Shubman Gill Out for 16 After Mistiming Lofted Shot vs Sri Lanka in 1st Test

Shubman Gill endured a disappointing outing with the bat on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka in Galle, getting dismissed for just 16 runs. The Indian captain fell to left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya after attempting an aggressive lofted shot.

India won the toss and elected to bat first, making a steady start despite losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early. The visitors then took control through a strong partnership between KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal before Rahul was forced to retire hurt because of cramps.

Shubman Gill falls while trying to attack Prabath Jayasuriya

Gill walked out to bat after the tea interval alongside Padikkal. The Indian skipper initially looked comfortable and struck two well-timed boundaries against the Sri Lankan attack.

However, Gill soon attempted to put pressure on Jayasuriya. The batter came down the track to attack the spinner, but the delivery turned slightly after pitching and caused him to mistime his lofted stroke.

The ball took the bottom part of Gill’s bat and went high into the air without enough distance to clear the boundary. Lahiru Udara, positioned around mid-on, moved backwards while keeping his eyes on the ball and completed a safe catch.

The dismissal handed Jayasuriya his first wicket of the day and ended Gill’s innings at 16.

India dominate despite Gill’s early dismissal

Gill’s dismissal did little to change India’s overall dominance on the opening day. The visitors had already built a strong platform through KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal.

India’s opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 47 runs before a mix-up between the two batters resulted in Jaiswal being run out.

Padikkal then joined Rahul at the crease and played a composed innings. The pair added 150 runs, putting India firmly in control before Rahul began experiencing cramps in his left hand.

Rahul eventually did not return to the crease after the tea break, with Gill taking his place alongside Padikkal.

Devdutt Padikkal produces a memorable Test century

While Gill struggled to make a major impact, Devdutt Padikkal delivered one of the highlights of India’s first day in Galle.

The left-hander, returning to the Test side as a replacement for the injured Sai Sudharsan, produced a magnificent maiden Test century. Padikkal showed excellent composure against both Sri Lanka’s pace attack and spinners.

His century also strengthened his case for the crucial No. 3 position. Padikkal arrived in Sri Lanka with confidence after scoring an unbeaten 142 during India’s warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka Cricket XI.

India finish Day 1 in a commanding position

With Padikkal continuing to score freely and Rishabh Pant joining him after Gill’s dismissal, India remained firmly in control of the contest.

At stumps on Day 1, India had reached 288/2, leaving Sri Lanka with plenty of work to do on the second day. Padikkal’s century and India’s strong batting display have given the visitors an excellent platform in the opening Test of the series.

For Sri Lanka, the challenge will now be to find a way to break India’s remaining batting partnership quickly and prevent the visitors from building a potentially decisive first-innings total.
