Diljan Ansari, a native of Jharkhand who has been working as a seasonal labourer in Karnataka for nearly 15 years, was allegedly assaulted by a group of four men in Mangaluru after they suspected him of being an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh.
According to initial police findings, the attackers confronted Ansari on the street and demanded that he produce identity documents. Despite repeatedly asserting that he was an Indian citizen, the men allegedly refused to listen and began questioning his nationality aggressively.
Assault with Blunt Objects, Severe Head Injuries
The situation quickly escalated into violence. Police said the accused used blunt objects to attack Ansari, causing serious injuries to his head and body. Witnesses reported that the assault continued until a local woman intervened, forcing the attackers to flee the scene.
The incident took place in Mangaluru, Karnataka, an area that has seen a steady influx of migrant workers over the years, particularly from eastern Indian states such as Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal.
Fear Delayed Police Complaint
Police officials stated that Ansari did not immediately approach law enforcement after the attack. Being a migrant worker, he reportedly feared harassment and possible repercussions. Instead, he returned home without filing a formal complaint.
The matter came to light only later when local leaders raised the issue and urged the police to intervene. Following this, authorities initiated an investigation and traced the victim.
Identity Verified, Accused Booked for Attempted Murder
After verifying Ansari’s documents, the police confirmed that he is an Indian citizen and that the allegations against him were entirely baseless. Officials described the attack as a case of mistaken identity driven by prejudice and misinformation.
Four individuals — identified as Sagar, Danush, Lalu Rathish, and Mohan — have been named as accused in the case. Police sources claim the men are allegedly associated with a right-wing group.
The accused have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of criminal intimidation and attempted murder.
Manhunt Launched, Victim Recovering
At present, all four accused are absconding. Police teams have been formed to track them down and ensure their swift arrest. Senior officials have assured strict action and said such incidents would not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, Diljan Ansari is undergoing medical treatment and is reported to be recovering from his injuries. Authorities have stated that his safety and legal support will be ensured.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of migrant workers and the dangers of vigilante action based on suspicion, underscoring the need for public awareness, restraint, and strict enforcement of the law.
