Aakash Chopra Calls India vs Australia a ‘Virtual Quarterfinal’ After Women’s T20 World Cup Defeat to South Africa

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes India’s final group-stage clash against Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 could effectively become a knockout match after their six-wicket defeat to South Africa.

India suffered their first loss of the tournament at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester after South Africa successfully chased down a target of 159 with five balls remaining. The defeat has complicated India’s path to the semifinals and increased the importance of their remaining fixtures.

Chopra labels Australia clash a virtual quarterfinal

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra explained that South Africa are favorites to win their remaining group-stage matches, while Australia continue to look like the strongest team in the competition.

“Where are India standing now? I am saying it would be a virtual quarterfinal because South Africa have two easy games, and I feel they would win those matches. Australia will keep winning their matches. It seems like they are head and shoulders above the rest.”

Chopra added that India’s qualification hopes could ultimately depend on defeating Australia in their final group-stage encounter.

“If South Africa win their remaining games, we also win the one match in between, and assuming Australia don’t lose to Pakistan, if India win the match against Australia, they have chances to progress, or else they would be done. So it seems like it would be a virtual quarterfinal. Beat Australia and make a place in the semifinals.”

India currently have four points from three matches and remain firmly in contention for a semifinal berth. Victories against Bangladesh and Australia could take them to eight points and potentially secure qualification based on net run rate.

India failed to capitalize on a strong start

Chopra also felt India missed an opportunity to post a match-winning total after an explosive beginning with the bat. The Women in Blue raced to a strong position during the first half of the innings but lost momentum during the middle and death overs.

“India decided to bat first after winning the toss, and the start was explosive. We reached 50 very quickly and nearly 100 in 12 overs, but then we couldn’t even touch 160. We lost wickets at regular intervals. This match might have been in your grasp had you scored 10 or 15 more runs.”

Shafali Verma and Sree Charani impressed

Among India’s positives, Chopra praised Shafali Verma for providing an aggressive start and young spinner Sree Charani for making crucial breakthroughs during South Africa’s chase.

Shafali scored a brisk 31 off 15 balls and later contributed with the ball, returning figures of 1/22 from four overs. Charani delivered one of the standout spells of the match, claiming 3/24 and removing key South African batters, including captain Laura Wolvaardt.

Marizanne Kapp steals the spotlight

Despite India’s bright moments, Chopra reserved special praise for South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, whose unbeaten innings proved decisive.

“Marizanne Kapp’s storm came, and she won the game single-handedly. If the entire team scores 161 and someone scores 81 out of that, you doff your hat and say, Marizanne Kapp, you are an outstanding cricketer.”

Kapp remained unbeaten on 81 from just 45 deliveries, anchoring South Africa’s successful chase and taking her team a significant step closer to the semifinals.

India’s road to the semifinals

India’s qualification equation remains straightforward. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side must first overcome Bangladesh before turning their attention to the crucial showdown against Australia. A victory in both matches would significantly boost their chances of reaching the last four and keeping their Women’s T20 World Cup title hopes alive.
