Sri Lanka fought back through an unbeaten partnership between Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva after an early collapse triggered by West Indies pacers on Day 1 of the first Test at North Sound.
At lunch, Sri Lanka reached 95/3, with Chandimal unbeaten on 40 and Dhananjaya on 25 after the visitors were reduced to 42/3 during a challenging opening session.
West Indies made an ideal start after winning the toss and opting to field. Veteran fast bowler Kemar Roach struck in the very first over, dismissing Pathum Nissanka with a sharp catch taken at short leg by Amir Jangoo.
The hosts tightened their grip in the 10th over when Alzarri Joseph produced a devastating double strike. He first trapped Nishan Madushka lbw for 23 with a delivery that jagged back sharply before removing the dangerous Kamindu Mendis on the very next ball, caught behind.
Joseph’s twin breakthroughs left Sri Lanka under immense pressure as the new Dukes ball continued to offer movement on a lively North Sound surface.
However, Chandimal and Dhananjaya responded with maturity and composure. The experienced duo absorbed the pressure and gradually rebuilt the innings with a valuable 53-run unbeaten partnership.
Chandimal looked particularly positive, driving confidently through the off-side and punishing loose deliveries. Dhananjaya complemented him well, showcasing elegant straight drives while ensuring Sri Lanka did not lose further wickets before the interval.
Despite the recovery, West Indies remain in a strong position with plenty of assistance still available for the seamers on a pitch offering pace, bounce, and movement.
