Baker Mayfield has opened up about his relationship with his family following a lengthy financial and legal dispute involving millions of dollars. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback revealed that relations have improved and that he is willing to leave the past behind.
The family dispute began in 2018, when Mayfield and his wife, Emily, alleged that millions of dollars had been transferred from accounts belonging to them into companies owned or managed by members of Mayfield’s family.
Baker Mayfield Says Family Relationship Has Improved
During a recent interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Mayfield provided an update on his relationship with his family. He indicated that the situation has improved significantly, particularly after his parents met his daughter, Kova.
Mayfield explained that having grandchildren helped create an opportunity for the family to reconnect. He said that taking Kova to meet her grandparents around her first birthday was an emotional moment.
The quarterback also emphasized the importance of forgiveness and acknowledging personal mistakes when attempting to repair relationships.
The $11.741 Million Legal Dispute
The family reconciliation comes after a complicated legal dispute involving Mayfield and his wife. In August 2023, the couple’s attorneys filed a petition seeking financial records from companies connected to Mayfield’s father James and brother Matt.
The parties eventually reached an agreement involving approximately $11.741 million in February 2024. However, the dispute did not completely disappear.
In November 2024, Mayfield filed another lawsuit, alleging that the companies had failed to fulfill the terms of the settlement agreement.
Despite the legal conflict, Mayfield’s latest comments indicate that he has chosen to focus on rebuilding family relationships rather than remaining defined by the dispute.
Mayfield Emphasizes Forgiveness
Mayfield acknowledged that he has made mistakes in his own life and said that forgiveness was an important part of his decision to reopen the door to his family.
His comments suggest that the quarterback is attempting to separate the legal and financial issues of the past from his family’s personal relationships.
With children now involved, Mayfield appears determined to create an opportunity for his family members to reconnect and move forward.
Baker Mayfield Opens Up About His Physiotherapist
During the same interview, Mayfield also discussed the importance of his physiotherapist, Dave Matthews, who has worked with him since 2018.
Mayfield first met Matthews through his former Cleveland Browns teammate Drew Stanton. Since then, he has credited Matthews with helping him manage physical issues throughout his football career.
The Buccaneers quarterback explained that Matthews can often identify potential problems before Mayfield receives a formal medical evaluation on the sideline.
Buccaneers Teammates Join Mayfield for Recovery Sessions
Mayfield also revealed that some of his Tampa Bay teammates have joined him at home for sessions with Matthews. Players including Chris Godwin, Luke Goedeke, Tristan Wirfs and Bucky Irving have reportedly taken part.
Mayfield described the gatherings as a relaxed environment where teammates can spend time together while dealing with the physical demands of an NFL season.
He emphasized that football involves experiencing both the positive and difficult moments together, making those relationships valuable away from the field as well.
When Does Baker Mayfield’s 2026 NFL Season Begin?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are scheduled to begin their 2026 NFL season against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 13.
The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff on Fox, with Mayfield entering another season as the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback.
