Bjorn Fortuin to Captain South Africa on Namibia Tour as Markram and Bavuma Rested

Bjorn Fortuin has been appointed captain of South Africa’s white-ball squad for their upcoming tour of Namibia, with regular captains Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma among the senior players rested for the trip.

The tour will feature a T20I tri-series involving South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, followed by three ODIs against Namibia. The matches are part of South Africa’s preparations for a packed period of cricket that includes next year’s ODI World Cup.

South Africa rest several first-choice players

South Africa have opted to manage the workload of several key players ahead of an extremely busy home season. Markram, the regular T20I captain, and Bavuma, who leads the ODI side, have both been given time away from international cricket.

The frontline bowling group has also been rested. Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj are all absent from the Namibia-bound squad.

Only three players who could be considered part of South Africa’s strongest current white-ball sides have been selected: Dewald Brevis, Lhuan-dré Pretorius and Kwena Maphaka.

Bjorn Fortuin gets another opportunity to revive international career

Fortuin’s appointment gives the experienced left-arm spinner an important opportunity to lead a young and relatively inexperienced group. The 31-year-old has not played international cricket since November 2025.

Fortuin has represented South Africa in 16 ODIs and 27 T20Is and is approaching 300 domestic white-ball appearances. He has also established himself as a leader at domestic level through his captaincy of the Lions.

South Africa’s all-format coach Shukri Conrad backed Fortuin’s leadership credentials and said the team has full confidence in his ability to guide the squad.

“Bjorn is an experienced player and proven leader who has successfully captained the Lions, and we have every confidence in his ability to lead this group.”

Duan Jansen earns maiden South Africa call-up

One of the biggest talking points in the squad is the inclusion of Duan Jansen, twin brother of South Africa international Marco Jansen. Duan has earned his maiden senior international call-up after being named the One-Day Cup Player of the Year at the latest Cricket South Africa awards.

The all-rounder has impressed domestically and will now have an opportunity to showcase his skills at international level. His selection also continues a growing family connection within South African cricket.

Eathan Bosch, brother of Corbin Bosch, has also been rewarded with his first T20I call-up. Eathan has previously played one ODI for South Africa and could now add a T20I appearance to his international record.

Hermann brothers included in Namibia tour squad

The South Africa squad also includes brothers Jordan Hermann and Rubin Hermann. Jordan has represented the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, while Rubin plays for the Paarl Royals in the SA20.

Jordan previously featured in the T20I series against New Zealand earlier in the year but suffered an injury during the opening match. His selection gives him another chance to establish himself at international level.

Wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen and young fast bowler Nqobani Mokoena have also been included in the ODI squad for the first time.

South Africa look to domestic performers for Namibia challenge

The Namibia tour has created an opportunity for several players who have performed strongly in domestic cricket. Conrad specifically highlighted Duan Jansen as one of the players who has earned his opportunity through consistent performances.

The squad also contains internationally experienced players such as Tony de Zorzi, Jason Smith, Lutho Sipamla and Prenelan Subrayen. Their experience will be important in providing stability around the younger members of the team.

Jansen is the only genuine seam-bowling all-rounder in the squad, while Gerald Coetzee and Senuran Muthusamy have been left out because they are part of the South Africa A squads facing Bangladesh A.

South Africa A squad prepares for Bangladesh

South Africa will simultaneously send an A side to face Bangladesh A in four-day and one-day matches. The selection of Coetzee and Muthusamy for those fixtures could indicate that both players are being prepared for the Test assignments later in the season.

The dual-track approach allows South Africa to manage its international workload while giving fringe and emerging players valuable competitive experience.

Namibia series important ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup

The white-ball matches against Namibia carry additional significance because South Africa are beginning to build towards the 2027 men’s ODI World Cup.

The first-ever ODI series between South Africa and Namibia will also strengthen cricketing ties between neighbouring southern African nations. The fixtures were added to the schedule relatively late as the region looks to increase engagement between its national teams.

Conrad has stressed the importance of playing neighbouring countries while continuing to prepare for the World Cup. The Namibia series therefore provides South Africa with an opportunity to assess players outside the established first-choice group.

South Africa face a demanding eight-month schedule

Workload management is likely to remain a major consideration for South Africa throughout the next eight months. Their home schedule includes incoming tours from Australia, Bangladesh and England, followed by the SA20 and an away series in Sri Lanka.

With a heavy Test schedule also on the horizon, resting senior white-ball players for the Namibia tour allows South Africa to preserve their leading stars while giving younger players meaningful international exposure.

For Fortuin, meanwhile, the tour represents a significant opportunity. After more than nine months away from international cricket, captaincy of the Namibia-bound squad could provide the experienced spinner with a route back into South Africa’s plans.
