Fermin Lopez Reacts to Ronald Araujo’s Reported Liverpool Loan Move

Fermin Lopez has reacted to reports that Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo is set to leave the club for Liverpool on a season-long loan deal.

The reported move comes as Liverpool look to strengthen their defence after suffering a number of injuries and departures at the back. Araujo, who remains under contract with Barcelona, is reportedly being considered as an option to provide additional defensive depth.

Lopez admitted that Araujo’s departure is disappointing, particularly because of the Uruguay international’s leadership role and his relationship with the Barcelona squad.

“He has come to say goodbye. It’s a shame, because he’s a captain and I have a good relationship with him. He made the decision to continue developing, and I hope he comes back next season.”

Fermin Lopez Speaks About Ronald Araujo’s Barcelona Exit

Araujo has established himself as an important figure at Barcelona since joining the club from Boston River in 2019. He initially featured for the club’s B team before becoming a regular in the senior squad.

The 27-year-old defender was part of Barcelona’s La Liga-winning side last season. He scored three goals in 24 league appearances as Hansi Flick’s team successfully defended their domestic title.

Araujo also featured once during Barcelona’s successful Supercopa Espana campaign, further adding to his contribution during the season.

Lopez was also asked about reports linking Barcelona with a move for Rodri, the Spain captain and 2026 FIFA World Cup winner.

The Barcelona attacker refused to speculate about the club’s transfer plans and instead placed his trust in sporting director Deco and the club’s decision-makers.

“I don’t have any information on this matter, but whatever Deco and the sporting director decide will be fine with me. Everyone knows Rodri is a great player. I don’t want to get too involved in this. It’s disrespectful to those who are already here.”

Lopez’s comments underline his desire to avoid discussing transfer speculation involving players who are not currently part of Barcelona’s squad.

Fermin Lopez Comments on Ferran Torres Transfer Rumours

Another Barcelona player linked with a possible move away from the club is Ferran Torres, with reports suggesting that Paris Saint-Germain could be interested in the forward.

Lopez again avoided making any definitive comments, explaining that he did not have enough information about Torres’ situation.

“I don’t want to go into that, because I don’t have the necessary information. He is a good companion and a friend; I hope he decides what’s best for him.”

Torres was also part of Spain’s successful 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. He scored the winning goal in the 106th minute as Spain defeated 10-man Argentina in extra time in the final in New Jersey.

How Has Ronald Araujo Performed for Barcelona?

Ronald Araujo has enjoyed a largely successful spell at Barcelona despite dealing with several injury problems during his time at the club.

Since progressing from Barcelona’s B team to the senior side, the Uruguay international has made 213 appearances across competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists.

During the 2025-26 season, Araujo scored four goals in 38 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating his importance to Barcelona’s defensive unit.

His physical strength, defensive ability and versatility have made him a valuable member of the squad, while his status as captain has further increased his importance within the dressing room.

Araujo’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Campaign

Araujo was also part of Uruguay’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

However, his tournament was limited by injury. The defender missed Uruguay’s opening two group-stage matches because of a muscle problem and ultimately did not feature for a single minute as the two-time world champions were eliminated in the group stage.

Liverpool Move Could Give Araujo a Fresh Challenge

If the reported loan move to Liverpool is completed, Araujo would have the opportunity to experience a new league and a different tactical environment while continuing his development.

For Barcelona, however, his departure would leave a significant leadership and defensive gap. Lopez’s comments reflect the sentiment within the squad, with the young attacker clearly hoping that the club captain returns to Barcelona when the loan spell ends.

With the new season approaching, Araujo’s future remains one of the key talking points around Barcelona, while Liverpool’s reported interest highlights the defender’s continued value at the highest level of European football.
