Bengaluru FC secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over FC Goa after Soham Varshneya scored a controversial winner in the third minute of second-half stoppage time at Fatorda on Friday. The result headlined the fifth matchweek of the 2026/27 Indian Super League (ISL), with Bengaluru moving up to third place in the standings.
The late goal came after a disputed refereeing decision, as Goa appeared to have a strong claim for a throw-in deep inside Bengaluru territory. However, the decision went against the hosts, allowing Bengaluru to launch an attack that ended with Varshneya finding the net. Meanwhile, league leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant also claimed three points after defeating Odisha FC 3-2 in a thrilling encounter.
NorthEast United FC continued their unbeaten start to the league with a 2-0 win over Churchill Brothers, extending their run to five matches. Here is a recap of the latest fixtures from ISL 2026/27 Matchweek 5.
FC Goa 1-2 Bengaluru FC: Varshneya strikes late after controversial decision
Soham Varshneya scored the decisive goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time as Bengaluru FC defeated FC Goa 2-1 at Fatorda on Friday evening.
The winning goal came in controversial circumstances. Goa appeared to deserve a throw-in deep in Bengaluru’s territory, but the decision was awarded the other way. Bengaluru quickly took advantage of the situation, moving the ball from one end of the pitch to the other to create the match-winning opportunity.
Ryan Williams spread the play towards the left flank, where Ashique Kuruniyan received the ball. Kuruniyan then set up Varshneya for a shot, and the youngster finished confidently into the corner to the right of Goa goalkeeper Bob Jackson.
Bengaluru had taken the lead much earlier in the contest. Borja Martinez opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a precise long-range effort, giving the visitors an early advantage.
However, their lead lasted only five minutes. Franchu responded with an even better strike from outside the penalty area, bringing FC Goa level at 1-1 and restoring balance to the contest.
After Franchu’s equaliser, neither side produced much notable attacking action for a significant period. The game appeared to be heading towards a draw before Varshneya delivered the decisive moment deep into stoppage time.
The victory lifted Bengaluru FC to third place in the league standings, leaving Pep Munoz’s side two points behind leaders Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Bengaluru also have a game in hand, giving them an opportunity to further improve their position.
Mohun Bagan 3-2 Odisha FC: Drazic brace helps Bagan win thriller
Mohun Bagan Super Giant maintained their position at the top of the ISL standings with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium. Dejan Drazic scored twice, while Lee Erwin netted the late winner to secure all three points for the hosts.
Drazic found the net in the 47th and 74th minutes, while Erwin scored in the 88th minute. Odisha FC responded through Mahmoud Eid and Everton, drawing level twice, but Bagan ultimately found a way to claim victory.
Mohun Bagan broke the deadlock shortly after half-time. Anirudh Thapa played a precise through ball for Drazic, who moved past Odisha’s defenders before calmly finishing with his left foot into the bottom corner. The goal gave Bagan a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.
Odisha responded quickly. In the 51st minute, Nihal Sudhish delivered a cross in front of goalkeeper Vishal Kaith, allowing Mahmoud Eid to tap the ball into the net and make it 1-1.
Bagan regained the advantage in the 74th minute through Drazic’s second goal of the evening. Lallianzuala Chhangte used his footwork to get away from his marker before sending a low cross into the penalty area. Drazic was well positioned to finish from close range, completing his brace and putting the hosts ahead 2-1.
Odisha refused to give up and equalised again five minutes later. Mehtab attempted to clear the ball, but it took a deflection off Tekcham Abhishek Singh and fell into Everton’s path. The Odisha forward turned before producing a right-footed curling finish to make it 2-2 in the 79th minute.
With the match approaching its conclusion, Mohun Bagan delivered the decisive blow. Lee Erwin struck sharply with his right foot in the 88th minute, sending the ball into the bottom-left corner to restore Bagan’s lead and seal a 3-2 victory.
The result allowed Mohun Bagan to retain their place at the top of the league standings after a match that saw both sides repeatedly find ways back into the contest.
Churchill Brothers 0-2 NorthEast United FC: Visitors extend unbeaten run
NorthEast United FC continued their impressive run in the 2026/27 Indian Super League with a 2-0 victory over Churchill Brothers at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Thursday. The result extended NorthEast’s unbeaten league run to five matches.
Ethyan González opened the scoring in the 16th minute, while Antonio Moyano added a second goal in the third minute of stoppage time to confirm the victory.
NorthEast took control early through a quick counter-attacking move. Following poor defending from Churchill Brothers, Jithin MS provided the assist for González, who used the outside of his boot to guide the ball into the net and give his side a 1-0 lead.
Churchill Brothers showed greater attacking intent after the interval. The hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser and placed the NorthEast defence under sustained pressure. However, the visitors remained organised and displayed defensive discipline to protect their advantage.
Churchill’s efforts to find a way back into the match ultimately left them vulnerable to another counter-attacking opportunity. NorthEast took advantage in the 90th minute plus three, when Abdul Rabeeh set up Moyano.
Moyano finished with a right-footed effort that took a deflection on its way into the goal, making it 2-0 and securing all three points for NorthEast United.
The victory was another positive result for the team, which has now gone five league matches without defeat.
ISL 2026/27 Matchweek 5: Key results and standings picture
The latest fixtures produced important results at both ends of the matchweek’s main storylines. Mohun Bagan continued to lead the standings after their 3-2 win over Odisha FC, while Bengaluru FC moved into third place with their late victory against FC Goa.
NorthEast United also strengthened their position with a fifth consecutive league match without defeat. Their disciplined performance against Churchill Brothers ensured that they took all three points without conceding.
Bengaluru’s win was particularly notable because of the late and disputed circumstances surrounding Varshneya’s goal. The result gives the team momentum as it continues its push towards the top of the table, while FC Goa will be left disappointed after conceding so late.
With Matchweek 5 underway, Mohun Bagan remain the team to catch, Bengaluru are building momentum, and NorthEast United are continuing their unbeaten run. The latest results have added another dramatic chapter to the 2026/27 Indian Super League season.
