Kevin Owens Reveals How He Fast-Tracked WWE Return for SummerSlam 2026

Kevin Owens has revealed new details about his remarkably quick return to WWE, explaining how he compressed several weeks of medical evaluations into just nine days after doctors cleared him to begin the process of returning to the ring.

Owens had been away from WWE action because of injury, with his eventual comeback coming much sooner than many fans expected. The veteran revealed that once he learned he could begin the process of getting back in the ring, he immediately shortened his vacation to speed up his return.

In an interview with Faces Magazine, Owens explained that doctors informed him in mid-July that he could start the process required to return to in-ring competition.

Rather than waiting for the process to unfold at its usual pace, Owens pushed medical staff to complete the necessary evaluations as quickly as possible without compromising the required procedures.

“Yeah, everything was so quick. That’s the craziest part. By the time they told me I could get back in the ring, that was mid-July. I cut my vacation short to get back in the ring as soon as I could.”

Owens explained that medical clearance can take longer depending on how long a wrestler has been away, as well as the nature of the injury and any surgery involved.

“There’s a process to get medically cleared, and the longer you’ve been out, the longer that process is, depending on the injury, the surgery and all of that stuff.”

Owens completed his medical evaluations in just nine days

According to Owens, the normal process could have taken around a month, but he managed to complete the required steps in only nine days.

Instead of completing one medical task per day, Owens worked with the medical staff to arrange multiple evaluations back-to-back. That allowed him to move through the clearance process much faster while still following the necessary procedures.

The accelerated process ultimately gave WWE enough time to bring Owens back for SummerSlam, one of the company’s biggest events of the year.

After completing the necessary evaluations, Owens received confirmation that he would be involved at SummerSlam 2026. His return immediately placed him in the middle of a major storyline involving CM Punk and the Undisputed WWE Championship.

The timing proved particularly important for Owens, as he was able to return just weeks before his upcoming championship opportunity against Punk.

Owens earned his title opportunity at SummerSlam after pinning Sami Zayn in a Fatal 4-Way match. His comeback therefore quickly transformed from a long-awaited return into a major championship storyline.

Owens also discussed his relationship with CM Punk ahead of their Undisputed WWE Championship match on SmackDown in Toronto.

The Canadian star admitted that he and Punk simply are not compatible and suggested that Punk would probably agree with his assessment.

“You know, some people, you’re just not compatible with, and he’s one of them. I’m sure he’d happily say the same, like, we don’t gel.”

The comments add another layer to the highly anticipated championship confrontation, with Owens making it clear that there is little personal chemistry between the two WWE stars.
