NHL Rumors: Canucks Linked to Former Stanley Cup Winner Ben Hutton

Vancouver Canucks NHL rumors have linked the club with a familiar face as unrestricted free agent Ben Hutton has reportedly held discussions with the team about a potential return.

According to Vancouver insider Rick Dhaliwal, conversations have taken place between Hutton’s agent and the Canucks. However, there is currently no indication that the two sides are close to reaching an agreement.

Hutton, 33, became an unrestricted free agent after spending the previous five seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights. A return to Vancouver would bring the veteran defenseman back to the organization where his NHL career began.

Ben Hutton’s agent has reportedly spoken with the Canucks

Speaking on Canucks Conversation, Dhaliwal revealed that Hutton is one of the players whose representatives have been in contact with Vancouver.

“Ben Hutton is one who is interesting to me. There have been some conversations with Hutton’s agent and the Canucks, not sure where that goes,” Dhaliwal said.

The comments indicate that Vancouver has at least explored the possibility of bringing Hutton back, although the discussions should not be interpreted as evidence that a contract is imminent.

The Canucks reportedly have around $17.8 million in salary-cap space under the $104 million ceiling for the 2026-27 season, potentially giving the organization room to add another veteran defenseman.

Hutton has deep ties to the Vancouver Canucks

Hutton has a strong connection with Vancouver after beginning his NHL career with the Canucks. The organization selected him in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft.

He subsequently spent his first five NHL seasons with Vancouver before leaving the organization in free agency.

A return would therefore represent more than a typical free-agent addition. Hutton already understands the organization, the city and the Pacific Division, potentially making his transition easier if a deal is completed.

Hutton spent the past five seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights, where he served primarily as a depth defenseman.

During the 2025-26 regular season, he recorded six goals and 15 points in 55 games. He also appeared in seven playoff contests, registering one assist and a plus-one rating.

His two-year contract with Vegas was worth $1.95 million and carried an average annual value of $975,000 before expiring at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Those numbers suggest that Hutton would likely be viewed as an experienced depth option rather than a player expected to take on a major offensive role.

Hutton could provide leadership in the Canucks dressing room

Dhaliwal suggested that Hutton’s potential value to Vancouver could extend beyond his on-ice contributions.

While discussing the Canucks’ dressing room, the insider argued that the team’s new management group needs to improve the environment around the players and identified Hutton as someone who could contribute in that area.

“One of the biggest things this new regime is going to do is fix that dressing room. The Canucks’ dressing room has been the worst in the NHL the last two years, and you fix it with guys like Hutton,” Dhaliwal said.

Hutton’s familiarity with the organization and his extensive NHL experience could make him an appealing veteran presence if Vancouver decides to pursue the reunion.

Former Stanley Cup winner brings championship experience

Hutton has played 575 regular-season games in the NHL, recording 30 goals, 109 assists and 139 points.

He was also part of the Golden Knights team that won the Stanley Cup in 2023. Although his role during that championship run was primarily as a depth defenseman, the experience remains a valuable addition to his résumé.

For a Canucks team looking to improve its roster and dressing-room culture, having a player who has experienced a championship environment could provide another potential benefit.

Hutton knows the Pacific Division extremely well

Another factor working in Hutton’s favor is his extensive experience against Pacific Division opponents.

According to the available figures, 571 of his 575 NHL games have come against teams from the division. His five seasons with Vegas naturally contributed heavily to that total.
