Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who died after an on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a LaLiga 2 match. The 30-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest after the incident late on Monday and was taken to hospital, where he later died.
The National Police confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation had been opened. However, Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told Spanish news agency EFE that criminal proceedings were considered unlikely because the collision occurred during the course of a football match.
De Miguel’s death has prompted widespread mourning across Spanish Football, with clubs, players and governing bodies expressing condolences. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has also extended the suspension of its competitions through November 6 as a mark of respect.
Police investigate Jesús de Miguel’s death after on-field collision
The National Police opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding De Miguel’s death following the collision during Tenerife’s match against FC Andorra on Monday. The investigation includes the possibility of involuntary manslaughter, although the opening of proceedings does not mean that anyone has been charged or found responsible.
Under Spanish law, deaths resulting from non-natural causes, including accidents, are subject to judicial investigation. Authorities are therefore examining the circumstances of the incident as part of the required legal process.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told EFE that criminal proceedings were unlikely, pointing out that the collision took place during play. His comments indicate that the incident is being considered in the context of a sporting contest, even as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the player’s death.
The investigation follows a tragic incident that occurred in the closing moments of Monday’s match. De Miguel was challenging for a loose ball when FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area to contest it.
How the collision between De Miguel and Jesús Owono happened
The collision took place in the seventh minute of stoppage time, with the score tied at 2-2. Owono left his penalty area and moved towards midfield to challenge for a long ball that De Miguel was attempting to reach.
The two players collided heavily, leaving the Tenerife forward seriously injured. De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was immediately attended to by medical personnel. The match was abandoned so that medical staff could provide emergency treatment.
Owono was shown a straight red card for the challenge. The referee’s explanation described the incident as a sudden, high-kicking tackle on an opponent using excessive force while the ball was in play.
After receiving the red card, the goalkeeper began walking away from the field. However, he turned around and joined the other players who had rushed towards De Miguel to check on his condition.
The incident left players from both teams distressed as medical staff worked to treat the injured forward. De Miguel was subsequently transported to hospital and admitted to intensive care.

The impact of De Miguel’s death was felt beyond the two clubs involved in Monday’s match. RCD Espanyol announced that it had postponed the presentation of its new head coach, Eder Sarabia, following the news.
The club confirmed that the presentation would now take place on Wednesday at the same time and at the Auditorium. Espanyol also expressed its condolences to De Miguel’s family, friends and everyone associated with CD Tenerife.

The Spanish Football Federation initially suspended all football activity scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, including two Copa del Rey matches. Later in the day, the RFEF extended the suspension of its competitions for three days following De Miguel’s death.
In an updated statement, the federation confirmed that the Copa del Rey Mapfre and Copa de la Reina Iberdrola would postpone their scheduled activities on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, November 3-5. The decision affected matches from the first and third rounds of the competitions.
“During the afternoon of Tuesday, November 3, the Royal Spanish Football Federation has agreed to extend the suspension of its football competitions to three days following the tragic death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel.”
The RFEF said the postponements were made as a mark of respect and solidarity. It also expressed its sorrow over what it described as an irreparable loss and offered condolences to De Miguel’s family and friends, as well as support to Tenerife and its supporters.
The federation said new dates and confirmed kick-off times for the postponed matches would be announced shortly. The extended suspension means the affected competitions will not resume on their original schedule.
UEFA announces moments of silence before matches
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin also expressed his condolences following the death of De Miguel. In a statement, he said the European football governing body was heartbroken by the news and that its thoughts were with the player’s family, teammates and everyone at Tenerife.
“We are heartbroken by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. We have searched for words and found only silence. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his team-mates, everyone at Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss.”
UEFA confirmed that all its competition matches scheduled for the week would be preceded by a moment of silence in tribute to the late forward. The gesture will allow players, supporters and officials across European football to remember De Miguel.
Jesús de Miguel’s career at CD Tenerife
De Miguel joined CD Tenerife in the summer of 2025 and became part of the squad during an important period for the Canary Islands club. The striker helped Tenerife secure promotion to the second division last season, contributing to the team’s progress.
His time at Tenerife followed his spell with CD Castellón, where he developed his career in Spanish football and built a connection with the club’s supporters. His performances earned him a move to Tenerife, where he continued competing in the Spanish league system.
His death at the age of 30 has brought a sudden end to his playing career and left his family, teammates, former clubs and supporters grieving. The tributes from Tenerife, Castellón, FC Andorra, Barcelona, Real Madrid, LaLiga, the RFEF and UEFA demonstrate the extent of the loss felt across the football community.
While the police investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting De Miguel’s family and respecting their request for privacy. The circumstances of the collision will be examined through the judicial process, while clubs and football authorities continue to pay tribute to the Tenerife forward.
