Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has opened up on the challenges that have plagued the five-time IPL champions over the last two seasons, pointing to injuries as the primary reason behind the team’s struggles.
CSK endured another difficult campaign in IPL 2026, finishing eighth in the points table and missing out on the playoffs for a third consecutive season. While the franchise showed signs of improvement compared to the previous year, recurring injury concerns once again disrupted their momentum.
Speaking about the disappointing results, Gaikwad made a surprising comparison with reigning IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), suggesting that any team would struggle if several key players were unavailable throughout the tournament.
Gaikwad Compares CSK’s Situation to RCB
The CSK skipper stressed that injuries can significantly alter the course of a season, regardless of how strong a squad appears on paper.
“The last two years haven’t gone the way everyone expected. But you have to understand certain dynamics and factors that affect a season. Even if you look at the successful teams like RCB, if you take away three or four major players, it is definitely going to have an impact.”
Gaikwad’s remarks highlighted how difficult it was for CSK to maintain consistency while constantly reshuffling their playing XI due to injuries.
Injury Crisis Hurt CSK Throughout IPL 2026
CSK entered the season already dealing with several setbacks. The franchise missed the services of key players at different stages of the tournament, affecting both batting and bowling departments.
Veterans and match-winners such as MS Dhoni and Nathan Ellis remained unavailable, while players including Ayush Mhatre and Khaleel Ahmed missed significant portions of the campaign.
The injury list continued to grow as overseas stars Jamie Overton and Dewald Brevis were also sidelined during crucial phases of the season.
With several first-choice players unavailable, CSK struggled to build momentum and consistency throughout the tournament.
Signs of Progress Despite Another Disappointing Finish
Despite finishing outside the playoff spots once again, Gaikwad believes there were positive signs during the 2026 campaign.
CSK registered two more wins than they managed in the previous season and remained in the playoff race for a significant part of the tournament before a late collapse ended their hopes.
The team also received encouraging performances from players such as Sanju Samson, who emerged as one of the standout performers during the season.
However, three consecutive defeats at the end of the campaign proved costly as CSK slipped down the standings and eventually finished eighth.
Gaikwad Remains Optimistic About CSK’s Future
Despite the recent setbacks, the CSK captain remains confident that the franchise is moving in the right direction.
With several injured stars expected to return before the next season and a stronger squad likely to be available, Gaikwad believes CSK can bounce back and re-establish themselves as title contenders.
The 2026 campaign may have ended in disappointment, but the skipper feels the lessons learned from two difficult seasons could help CSK launch a stronger challenge when IPL 2027 begins.
