India’s new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer endured a disappointing start to his leadership tenure as the Men in Blue suffered a surprise 34-run defeat against Ireland in the opening T20I of the two-match series in Belfast on Friday.
Chasing a challenging target of 183, India were bowled out for 148, with only Abhishek Sharma making a significant impact. The left-hander smashed a blistering 19-ball half-century, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to build partnerships as Ireland secured a memorable victory.
Shreyas Iyer refuses to make excuses
Speaking after the match, Iyer admitted India failed to execute their plans and stressed that victories cannot be taken for granted.
“You can’t take anything for granted. You can’t just turn up and win matches. You have to work hard and stay in the present. Whenever you get an opportunity to squeeze the opponent, you’ve got to do that. Never take any moment or situation lightly,” said Iyer.
The Indian skipper also acknowledged his own poor outing with the bat after managing just 3 runs off 7 balls.
‘Great start as a captain’
Despite the disappointing result, Iyer described the match as an important learning experience in his first outing as India’s T20I captain.
“Initially the bowlers were bowling with venom. We got a tremendous start, but in between we lost execution. We thought 140 would have been a good chase considering the start we had. Nonetheless, it’s a great experience here. We got a fair idea about the wicket and, yeah, a great start as a captain,” he said.
How the match unfolded
After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first. Ireland posted 182/9 in 20 overs, thanks to captain Lorcan Tucker’s half-century and a valuable 49-run knock by Gareth Delany. Fast bowler Harshit Rana impressed for India with figures of 3/24.
India’s chase got off to a poor start after Sanju Samson departed early. Abhishek Sharma briefly shifted the momentum with a whirlwind fifty, but his dismissal triggered a batting collapse. Late resistance from Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, and Harshit Rana wasn’t enough as Ireland wrapped up a convincing 34-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
India will now look to bounce back in the second and final T20I to avoid a series defeat.
