Team India‘s preparations for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka suffered a worrying moment after captain Shubman Gill sustained two separate blows during a practice session in Colombo.

According to reports, Gill was first hit on his right thumb while batting in the nets on the second day of India’s training camp. The team doctor immediately attended to the opener and applied a protective bandage to his thumb before play resumed.

Despite the painful blow, Gill returned to the nets and completed his batting session, providing an encouraging sign for the Indian team management.

Gill Hit Again During Slip Catching Practice

Shortly after finishing his batting drills, Gill suffered another scare during slip-catching practice when he was struck on his hand.

The India skipper was reportedly in visible discomfort as the physiotherapy staff rushed onto the field with an ice pack to treat the injury. There has been no official confirmation regarding the severity of either blow.

With the two-Test series against Sri Lanka beginning on August 15, India will be hoping their captain recovers quickly, especially after his impressive performances in the longest format since taking over the Test leadership.

India Already Dealing with Multiple Injury Concerns

Gill’s injury scare adds to an already lengthy list of fitness concerns for the Indian squad ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has already been ruled out of the series, leading to the inclusion of uncapped pacer Auqib Nabi. All-rounder Washington Sundar is expected to miss the opening Test because of a hamstring injury, while batter Sai Sudharsan remains doubtful as he continues recovering from a toe injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Earlier, India had also lost Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, further stretching the team’s resources ahead of the important Test assignment.

India Hope Gill Avoids Serious Injury

Gill has previously dealt with physical setbacks, including neck problems and cramping during international Cricket. However, his decision to continue batting after the first blow suggests the latest injury may not be serious.

India will closely monitor the captain’s condition over the coming days before the warm-up fixture and the opening Test, as they aim to begin the new World Test Championship cycle on a positive note in Sri Lanka.
