Teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to wait for his senior India debut after being left out of the playing XI for the first T20I against England in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.
The 15-year-old opener, who earned widespread attention following a record-breaking IPL campaign, has now remained on the sidelines for three consecutive T20 internationals, including both matches against Ireland and the series opener against England.
While the Indian team management has persisted with its established top-order combination, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes delaying Sooryavanshi’s debut could create additional pressure when he eventually takes the field.
Gavaskar Shares Concern Over Extended Wait
Speaking during the broadcast, Gavaskar said that every match Sooryavanshi spends on the bench increases anticipation surrounding his debut.
According to the batting great, expectations will continue to rise, making it more challenging for the youngster when his opportunity finally arrives.
“It will put him under more pressure whenever he gets an opportunity,” Gavaskar said. “But at 15 years of age, you don’t think too much about pressure. He knows that if he gets the opportunity in the second or third game, he will have to deliver almost immediately.”
Despite his concerns, Gavaskar believes Sooryavanshi’s youth could help him handle the situation better than many experienced players.
Learning Opportunity for the Youngster
Gavaskar also highlighted the benefits of being part of the senior Indian setup, even without immediate playing opportunities.
The legendary opener feels that spending time alongside established international stars can be invaluable for a player at such an early stage of his career.
“He is happy to be around. This Indian team is full of lovely, tremendous players, and it is just fantastic for him to be learning from them,” Gavaskar added.
Training alongside some of India’s leading cricketers and observing international preparations firsthand could provide Sooryavanshi with crucial experience for the future.
India Continue to Back Established Top Order
The Indian team management once again showed faith in the opening combination of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan despite the team’s recent T20I series defeat in Ireland.
As a result, Sooryavanshi remained on the bench while the experienced trio retained their places in the lineup.
India’s decision reflects a desire to maintain continuity ahead of upcoming international assignments, although calls for the teenager’s debut continue to grow among fans and experts.
Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer Rescue India
India endured a disastrous start in the opening T20I against England after slumping to 6 for 2 inside the first two overs.
Sanju Samson was dismissed following a brilliant catch from Tom Banton, while Ishan Kishan was run out after a mix-up with Abhishek Sharma.
Abhishek then launched a stunning counterattack, smashing 59 runs from just 24 deliveries. During his explosive innings, he also became the fastest batter to reach 100 sixes in T20 internationals, achieving the milestone in only 785 balls.
Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with a composed 68 off 47 deliveries, while Shivam Dube provided late momentum with an unbeaten 42 from 21 balls.
India eventually posted a competitive total of 189 for 7, recovering impressively after their early collapse.
Rain Denies Result in Series Opener
England never got the opportunity to begin their chase as persistent rain interrupted proceedings throughout the evening.
The drizzle intensified after India’s innings concluded, forcing match officials to eventually abandon the game without a single ball being bowled in England’s reply.
The no-result means both teams remain level heading into the remainder of the series, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s wait for a much-anticipated India debut continues.
Will Sooryavanshi Get His Chance?
With India possessing an established top order and the management showing confidence in experienced players, there is no guarantee that Sooryavanshi will immediately break into the playing XI.
However, his impressive performances in domestic cricket and the IPL have already made him one of the most exciting young prospects in world cricket. As anticipation continues to build, all eyes will remain on the team sheet for the next T20I to see whether the teenage sensation finally receives his long-awaited India cap.
