India’s newly-appointed T20I vice-captain Tilak Varma has been reminded that leadership responsibilities do not guarantee a secure place in the team. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif stressed that every player, including the vice-captain, must consistently perform to retain their spot in the squad.
Following India’s T20 World Cup triumph, the selectors introduced a major leadership reshuffle. Shreyas Iyer was named the new T20I captain after Suryakumar Yadav lost both the captaincy and his place in the squad. Meanwhile, Tilak Varma replaced Axar Patel as vice-captain, marking a significant milestone in the youngster’s international career.
Mohammad Kaif: Vice-captaincy Doesn’t Guarantee Selection
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif reminded Tilak that Indian cricket now rewards only consistent performances.
“Being vice-captain doesn’t mean Tilak Varma’s place is guaranteed. If his form dips, he can be dropped just like anyone else. Axar Patel was vice-captain before him, and now the team has moved on,” Kaif said.
Kaif cited recent examples where leadership roles failed to secure long-term places in the side. Shubman Gill, despite serving as vice-captain in several T20Is, eventually lost his place and missed India’s T20 World Cup squad.
“Nobody’s Place Is Safe”
Kaif added that the current Indian team management believes every player must earn their place in every match.
“Nobody’s place is guaranteed—not even the captain’s. Every player has to perform consistently because selections are reviewed after every game,” Kaif explained.
While Tilak Varma begins his new leadership role with high expectations, the young left-hander will need to continue delivering strong performances to cement his place in India’s T20I setup.
