Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are facing legal action over the name and branding of their Kansas City steakhouse, 1587 Steakhouse, after 1587 Sneakers filed a federal trademark lawsuit against the NFL stars and the restaurant’s business group.
According to court documents reported by TMZ, 1587 Sneakers has challenged claims from Kelce and Mahomes that they have no direct ownership or control over the limited liability company established to operate the restaurant.
Why are Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes being sued?
The dispute centers on the use of the number “1587.” 1587 Sneakers claims it owns trademark rights connected to the number through its sneaker business and argues that the steakhouse’s use of the same branding could create confusion.
Kelce and Mahomes have reportedly sought to have the case dismissed. Their position is that they do not have direct interests in or control over the LLC behind the restaurant and that they do not have sufficient connections to New York, where the lawsuit was filed.
1587 Sneakers challenges NFL stars’ claims
The company behind the lawsuit strongly disputes the players’ characterization of their involvement with the steakhouse. In its latest court filing, 1587 Sneakers argued that Kelce and Mahomes are attempting to present themselves as celebrities who were only used to promote the restaurant.
The company maintains that the NFL stars publicly associated themselves with 1587 Steakhouse and actively promoted the business around its launch, making their involvement relevant to the trademark dispute.
Steakhouse website highlights Kelce and Mahomes partnership
The restaurant’s official website has described 1587 Steakhouse as a collaboration involving Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce alongside Noble 33. The two Kansas City Chiefs stars also took part in an extensive promotional campaign for the restaurant in late 2025.
1587 Sneakers is using those public associations as part of its argument against the players’ attempts to distance themselves from the restaurant’s operations.
What does 1587 Sneakers want?
1587 Sneakers is seeking an end to the restaurant group’s use of the disputed name and branding. The company also wants the sale of merchandise connected to the contested branding to stop and is seeking unspecified damages.
However, the dispute may still be resolved without a lengthy court battle. Adam King, co-founder of 1587 Sneakers, has previously indicated that negotiations remain possible.
“From the onset, we have communicated a sincere belief that there is room for mutual respect and understanding,” King said, while expressing hope that the parties could resolve the dispute amicably.
What happens next in the lawsuit?
The trademark litigation remains ongoing, and the court has not yet ruled on Kelce and Mahomes’ motion to dismiss. Until a decision is made, the allegations from both sides remain part of an active legal dispute.
The case could ultimately move toward settlement, dismissal or further litigation depending on the court’s decision and any negotiations between the parties. For now, the central issue remains whether the NFL stars can distance themselves from the steakhouse’s alleged trademark infringement despite their prominent public association with the business.
