Lancashire Thunder secured a crucial six-wicket victory over rivals Yorkshire Women in the Vitality Blast Women on July 1 at Clifton Park, York. Teen sensation Venus Weerappuli delivered a match-winning spell of 3 for 13 before Lancashire chased down 161 with 17 balls to spare.

The result keeps Lancashire’s slim quarter-final hopes alive, while Yorkshire’s playoff aspirations are hanging by a thread after a seventh defeat of the campaign.

Weerappuli Leads Lancashire Fightback

Yorkshire appeared set for a massive total after opener Ami Campbell launched a blistering assault at the top of the order. Campbell smashed 47 runs from just 21 deliveries, including two sixes, helping Yorkshire race to 79 for 1 inside seven overs.

However, Lancashire’s young leg-spinner Venus Weerappuli turned the game around with an outstanding spell. The 16-year-old, who has impressed through age-group and academy cricket, removed the dangerous Campbell before also dismissing Sterre Kalis and Olivia Thomas.

Supported by fellow spinner Sophie Morris and pacers Tara Norris and Kate Cross, Lancashire restricted Yorkshire to 160 for 7 after they had looked capable of reaching a much larger total.

Yorkshire Lose Momentum After Bright Start

Campbell’s aggressive innings powered Yorkshire’s early charge, with 24 runs coming from one over bowled by England seamer Kate Cross. However, once Campbell departed, Yorkshire struggled to maintain the same scoring rate.

Captain Lauren Winfield-Hill also fell during Lancashire’s comeback, while Kalis managed 22 runs before becoming another victim of Weerappuli.

The White Rose side eventually posted 160 for 7, but the total felt below par considering their explosive start.

Meg Lanning and Eve Jones Dominate the Chase

Lancashire’s pursuit began in equally aggressive fashion, led by Australian star Meg Lanning. The former Australia captain blasted 34 runs from just 15 balls and took advantage of an early life when a catch opportunity resulted in six runs.

Although Lanning fell with Lancashire on 46 for 1, opener Eve Jones ensured there would be no collapse. The left-hander produced a superb knock of 57 from 38 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes.

Jones shared a crucial 68-run partnership with Emma Lamb, who contributed 22 runs, effectively taking the game away from Yorkshire.

Ellie Threlkeld Finishes the Job

Even after the dismissals of Jones and Lamb, Lancashire remained firmly in control. England wicketkeeper-batter Ellie Threlkeld guided the chase to completion with an unbeaten 28, helping Lancashire finish on 163 for 4 in 17.1 overs.

The victory marked Lancashire Thunder’s second win in eight matches and provided a significant boost in confidence as they continue their push for a place in the knockout stages.
