Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are searching for a new head coach following the departure of Stephen Fleming, and former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh believes VVS Laxman would be the perfect candidate for the role ahead of IPL 2027.

Fleming’s exit marked the end of an iconic 18-year partnership with the franchise, during which CSK won five IPL titles and established themselves as one of the most successful teams in tournament history. However, three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance prompted the franchise to begin a new chapter.

Why VVS Laxman Could Be the Right Choice for CSK

According to Ramesh, Laxman’s biggest strength is his ability to build strong relationships with players and create a positive dressing-room environment.

“VVS Laxman would be an excellent choice for CSK. He is respected by players, has tremendous coaching experience, and would be like a big brother to everyone in the squad,” Ramesh said.

CSK have long been known for their family-like culture, and Ramesh feels Laxman’s calm personality and leadership style would fit perfectly within the franchise’s philosophy.

Coaching Experience at the Highest Level

Laxman has served as India’s interim head coach on multiple occasions, stepping in whenever Rahul Dravid or Gautam Gambhir were unavailable. During those assignments, India enjoyed several notable successes, including winning the Asian Games 2023 gold medal and securing a T20I series victory in South Africa in 2024.

His experience working with young cricketers through the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has also earned him widespread praise across Indian cricket.

Sanju Samson Could Benefit the Most

Ramesh also highlighted the potential partnership between Laxman and Sanju Samson, who is expected to play a major role in CSK’s future plans.

He pointed to India’s T20I tour of South Africa in 2024, where Samson flourished under Laxman’s guidance, scoring two centuries in a four-match series.

“It was clear that Sanju Samson played with complete freedom under Laxman. If CSK see him as a future captain, the relationship between Samson and Laxman could become a major advantage for the franchise,” Ramesh explained.

CSK Looking Ahead to IPL 2027

Despite Samson finishing as CSK’s leading run-scorer in IPL 2026 with 477 runs, the franchise endured a disappointing campaign and ended eighth in the standings. The management is now expected to make significant changes as it looks to return to title contention.

Whether CSK ultimately turn to VVS Laxman remains to be seen, but his name is rapidly emerging as one of the strongest candidates to replace Stephen Fleming and lead the franchise into its next era.
