A routine domestic dispute in Florida turned into an unusual criminal investigation after a 22-year-old man allegedly told deputies that he had been having a sexual relationship with his mother since he turned 18, authorities said.

Christina Clemens, 46, and her son, Shane Clemens, 22, both of Lakeland, Florida, were subsequently charged with incest, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. The allegations emerged after Christina contacted police during a dispute and accused her son of hitting her.

According to the sheriff, the investigation took an unexpected direction when Shane allegedly disclosed the sexual relationship while speaking with deputies. Investigators then questioned both individuals about the allegation before making the incest arrests.

Domestic Dispute Leads Police to Incest Investigation

However, the husband allegedly acknowledged that he had previously been suspicious about the amount of time Christina and Shane spent together in the master bedroom. According to the sheriff, he said the two had been in the room with the door locked on occasions.

She was released after posting a total bond of $6,250 on September 4, according to those records.

Shane faces an additional domestic violence battery charge. Unlike his mother, he remained in custody without bond, according to the information provided by authorities.
