Shares of major automobile companies advanced on November 2 after strong October sales figures highlighted resilient demand across key vehicle segments. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Ashok Leyland and TVS Motor were among the gainers, while the Nifty Auto index traded higher as investors assessed festive-season demand and automakers’ sales performance.

At 9:55 am, the Nifty Auto index was up 1.07% at 25,694.6 points. Maruti Suzuki shares climbed 3% to Rs 11,744 apiece, while Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles gained 2.8% to Rs 272.80. Ashok Leyland advanced 2.6% to Rs 148.57, and TVS Motor rose 0.77% to Rs 4,227.50.

Maruti Suzuki Records Its Highest-Ever Monthly Sales

October sales numbers provided a positive signal for the Automobile Industry, with several manufacturers reporting double-digit growth. Maruti Suzuki recorded its highest-ever monthly sales total of 276,120 vehicles, representing a 25% increase.

TVS Motor reported a 29% rise in sales, reflecting continued strength in the two-wheeler segment. Tata Motors recorded 27% growth in commercial vehicle sales, while Ashok Leyland reported a 23% increase in the same segment.

The figures indicate that vehicle demand remained firm despite a high comparison base created by last year’s sales surge following goods and services tax (GST) cuts. However, the sustainability of this momentum will become clearer after the festive season.

Brokerages Highlight Strength in Two-Wheelers and Passenger Vehicles

Brokerage firm Jefferies said two-wheeler demand remained strong in October, while passenger vehicle sales gained momentum despite the challenging year-on-year comparison.

According to the brokerage, TVS Motor, Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp delivered the biggest positive surprises against its October wholesale sales forecasts. Jefferies retained TVS Motor and Eicher Motors among its preferred automobile stocks.

The assessment suggests that manufacturers with stronger-than-expected sales momentum could attract investor attention. However, wholesale sales performance alone does not establish whether the same pace of demand will continue in the coming months.

Diwali Timing Distorts Year-on-Year Sales Comparisons

Emkay Global pointed out that the shift in Diwali from October last year to November this year affected year-on-year retail sales comparisons. The change in festive timing made it harder to assess underlying demand by looking at October figures alone.

Festive periods are important for vehicle manufacturers because purchases often increase around major celebrations. When the dates of festivals shift between calendar years, sales can move between months, creating fluctuations that do not necessarily reflect a fundamental change in consumer demand.

For this reason, analysts are examining broader sales trends rather than relying entirely on individual monthly comparisons. The performance of automakers after the festive period will offer a clearer indication of whether demand remains strong.

Commercial Vehicle and Two-Wheeler Makers Attract Brokerage Preference

Emkay Global favoured two-wheeler and commercial vehicle manufacturers over passenger vehicle companies, citing their relatively greater ability to pass on rising commodity costs through price increases.

Input costs remain an important consideration for automakers because changes in commodity prices can affect manufacturing expenses and profit margins. Companies that can adjust vehicle prices without significantly affecting demand may be better positioned to manage cost pressures.

The brokerage’s preference also reflects the October performance of two-wheeler and commercial vehicle manufacturers. TVS Motor’s 29% sales growth and the increases reported by Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland underline the strength recorded in these segments during the month.

Tractor Sales Remain a Weak Spot

Tractor sales presented a contrasting picture. Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 12% decline in total sales, making the segment a notable exception to the broader growth reported by several automobile manufacturers.

Analysts highlighted the high comparison base and rising input costs as potential risks for the industry. However, Mahindra attributed the decline primarily to the shift in festive dates, suggesting that the timing of seasonal purchases affected the year-on-year comparison.

The tractor segment will require closer monitoring in the coming months to determine whether the decline reflects temporary calendar-related factors or a broader moderation in demand.

Post-Festive Demand and Input Costs Remain Key Factors

October’s sales performance has strengthened sentiment towards automobile stocks, but analysts caution that the industry still faces several challenges. The high base created by last year’s GST-related sales increase could make future growth comparisons more difficult.

Rising commodity costs may also put pressure on manufacturers’ margins, particularly if companies are unable to pass higher expenses on to customers through vehicle price increases. Supply constraints could further affect production and deliveries.

Investors will therefore be watching post-festive sales trends, pricing decisions and input-cost movements to assess the durability of the industry’s recovery. While October figures point to healthy demand across several vehicle categories, the next few months will be important in determining whether automakers can maintain their sales momentum.
