The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced WhatsApp-based services that will allow subscribers to check their Provident Fund (PF) balances, access passbook details and view their latest five transactions without visiting an EPFO office. The organisation has also launched an automatic settlement facility for eligible inoperative accounts with balances of up to Rs 1,000.

Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched both initiatives on Sunday during the celebration of EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day. The measures are aimed at making routine services easier to access and reducing paperwork for members seeking information or withdrawing small, unclaimed PF balances.

What EPFO Subscribers Can Do Through WhatsApp

Under the new facility, EPF members can use EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service to access key account information through their mobile phones. The available services include:

  • Checking their Provident Fund balance.
  • Viewing passbook details.
  • Checking their latest five PF transactions.
  • Getting personalised guidance and assistance related to the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY).

The facility is intended to make basic account-related services more convenient by providing access through a familiar messaging platform. Subscribers will no longer need to visit an EPFO office simply to obtain routine information such as their balance or recent transactions.

The Labour Ministry said the WhatsApp service would also provide personalised assistance to members completing requirements connected with PMVBRY. This could help eligible workers access information and guidance related to the employment-linked initiative.

Automatic Settlement of Inoperative EPF Accounts Up to Rs 1,000

Alongside the WhatsApp services, Mandaviya launched an automatic settlement facility for eligible inoperative EPF accounts. The initiative is designed to simplify the withdrawal of small balances that have remained unclaimed in inactive accounts.

Under the new arrangement, subscribers with Aadhaar-verified inoperative EPF accounts holding balances of up to Rs 1,000 will not have to submit individual claims to receive their money. Instead, the EPFO will initiate the settlement process automatically after completing the prescribed identity and bank account verification.

The verification requirement is intended to ensure that eligible funds are transferred to the correct beneficiaries. By removing the need for members to file separate withdrawal claims, the initiative aims to reduce procedural hurdles and make it easier to recover small outstanding PF amounts.

Around One Lakh Accounts Expected to Benefit

According to the Labour Ministry, approximately one lakh inoperative accounts are expected to benefit from the automatic settlement initiative. The total amount involved is estimated at around Rs 5 crore.

The initiative focuses on accounts with relatively small balances that may otherwise remain unclaimed because subscribers have not completed the withdrawal process. Automatic settlement could help members receive their eligible dues without having to navigate a separate claims procedure.

However, the facility applies to accounts that meet the specified conditions, including Aadhaar verification and the balance limit of Rs 1,000. The EPFO will also complete the required bank account and identity checks before transferring the money.

EPFO Marks Its 74th Foundation Day

The new digital and settlement initiatives were announced as part of the EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day celebrations. The event also featured the release of seven publications covering knowledge creation, institutional learning, legal awareness and compassionate governance.

Addressing the gathering, Mandaviya said the EPFO had developed into a trusted institution for India’s workforce over its 74-year journey. He highlighted the organisation’s role in managing long-term retirement savings and providing Social Security to millions of workers.

According to the minister, the EPFO has accumulated a corpus of Rs 32 lakh crore through contributions from more than 8 crore members. He said the size of the fund reflected the confidence placed in the institution by its members and the contribution of its workforce.

Minister Calls for More Worker-Centric Innovations

Mandaviya urged EPFO officials to prioritise worker-centric innovations as the organisation approaches its 75th year. He also called on employees to adapt to changing requirements, strengthen institutional resilience and continuously improve service delivery.

The latest initiatives reflect a broader effort to make provident fund services more accessible through digital platforms and simpler procedures. While WhatsApp access is intended to make everyday account information easier to obtain, automatic settlement addresses the problem of small balances remaining unclaimed in inactive accounts.

For subscribers, the key development is the expansion of access to basic PF information through WhatsApp and the removal of individual claim requirements for eligible inactive accounts with balances of up to Rs 1,000. The success of both measures will depend on smooth implementation, reliable verification and timely assistance to members.
