The global smartphone market is facing one of its most challenging periods in years, with shipments recording a sharp decline for the third consecutive quarter as rising component costs push device prices higher and weaken consumer demand. India is also expected to experience a significant slowdown, with smartphone shipments projected to fall around 20% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026.

According to preliminary estimates from Counterpoint Research, the global market recorded its weakest third-quarter performance in 14 years. Higher memory prices, increasing manufacturing costs and declining consumer affordability are putting pressure on smartphone sales, forcing manufacturers to reconsider their pricing and production strategies.

India Smartphone Shipments Expected to Fall 20%

India's smartphone market is not immune to the global downturn. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, told Hindustan Times that smartphone shipments in India are expected to decline approximately 20% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026.

The projected decline comes after a strong performance during the same period last year, creating a challenging comparison for manufacturers. It also highlights the pressure that rising device prices and cautious consumer spending are placing on the Indian smartphone industry.

Although India's festive shopping season begins in October, smartphone manufacturers generally build inventory with retailers during the preceding quarter to prepare for increased demand. This year, however, higher prices and subdued consumer interest appear to have encouraged companies and retailers to take a more cautious approach to stocking devices.

Pathak said price-sensitive smartphone segments are facing the greatest pressure, while premium and mid-premium devices have remained comparatively resilient. Nevertheless, he warned that the downturn could deepen as the impact of rising component costs spreads across the market.

Global Smartphone Market Records Consecutive Quarterly Declines

The latest Counterpoint Research estimates indicate that global smartphone shipments declined 20% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026. The contraction follows an 11% drop in the second quarter, which marked the weakest second-quarter shipment performance since 2013.

The market had already experienced a 6% year-on-year decline in the first quarter of 2026. The successive quarterly contractions suggest that the pressure on smartphone manufacturers is becoming more widespread rather than remaining limited to a particular period or market segment.

One of the biggest challenges is the increase in component costs, particularly memory chips. Manufacturers have passed a significant portion of these additional expenses on to consumers, contributing to an increase of around 20% in average smartphone retail prices so far in 2026, according to the supplied Counterpoint Research data.

As smartphones become more expensive, consumers are increasingly constrained by affordability concerns. Buyers may postpone upgrades, retain their existing devices for longer or reconsider purchasing higher-priced models, putting further pressure on shipment volumes.

Memory Prices Surge Fivefold in a Year

Rising memory prices have emerged as a major factor behind the smartphone industry's slowdown. Pathak said memory prices had increased fivefold within a year, creating substantial cost pressures for manufacturers.

He described the global smartphone market as going through one of its most difficult periods, adding that the full impact of the memory crisis became apparent in the third quarter of 2026, when shipments fell sharply.

Higher memory costs can affect multiple stages of smartphone production, from manufacturing expenses to final retail prices. Companies must decide whether to absorb these increases, potentially reducing profit margins, or pass them on to customers, risking weaker demand.

For manufacturers competing in India's price-sensitive market, the challenge is particularly significant. Higher prices can make it more difficult to persuade customers to upgrade, especially in entry-level and affordable smartphone categories.

Samsung and Apple Lead the Global Smartphone Market

Despite the broader industry downturn, Samsung and Apple remain the two leading smartphone manufacturers by global market share. Samsung held approximately 23% of the market in the third quarter of 2026, followed by Apple at 22%.

The two companies maintained their leading positions even as overall shipments declined. Their comparatively strong market shares reflect their established customer bases and positions across the mid-range, premium and ultra-premium smartphone segments.

Chinese manufacturers faced greater pressure during the quarter. Xiaomi held a 10% market share, followed by Oppo at 9% and Vivo at 8%. All three brands experienced year-on-year shipment declines, highlighting the challenges facing manufacturers competing in a market increasingly affected by rising costs and weaker consumer demand.

Xiaomi recorded a 30% decline in shipments, while Oppo and Vivo each reported a 20% fall. The companies are expected to introduce their flagship smartphone line-ups during the current quarter, potentially providing some support for sales and market momentum.

Samsung Benefits From Foldable and Mid-Range Phones

Samsung recorded a 3% year-on-year decline in shipments but remained ahead of its competitors in global market share. According to Counterpoint Research, the company's early momentum with its Galaxy Z Fold8 foldable smartphone helped support its position during the quarter.

Stable component supplies also gave Samsung an advantage in the mid-range segment, particularly through its Galaxy A series. This helped the company maintain a degree of resilience as some Chinese smartphone manufacturers lost momentum.

Samsung's performance illustrates how product positioning and supply stability can influence results during a market downturn. However, the company is not entirely protected from rising costs, as higher prices for premium devices could eventually affect demand.

Apple's Market Share Crosses 20% Despite Lower Shipments

Apple's global smartphone market share crossed 20% for the first time in the third quarter of 2026, reaching approximately 22%, even though its shipments declined year-on-year.

Part of the shipment decline was attributed to the absence of a comparatively affordable standard iPhone 18 model during the September launch period. The model is now expected to arrive early next year, according to the supplied report.

Apple also implemented price increases towards the end of the third quarter. At the same time, its iPhone 18 Pro models recorded stronger post-launch sales momentum than any previous Pro-generation launch, according to Pathak.

However, Apple's stronger position in the premium segment does not make it immune to the wider market slowdown. As device prices rise, even customers willing to pay more for high-end smartphones may become more selective about when and how they upgrade.

Smartphone Market Outlook Remains Uncertain

Pathak expressed limited optimism about the smartphone market's prospects for the remainder of 2026, warning that the worst of the downturn might not yet have passed.

He said the upcoming quarter could prove particularly difficult, noting that Samsung and Apple have also begun increasing prices for their ultra-premium devices. Both companies are reportedly reducing production orders, signalling that manufacturers are adjusting expectations to reflect weaker demand.

The market's challenges have also shifted. While supply constraints were previously a major concern, broader consumer sentiment, macroeconomic pressures and economic uncertainty are now playing a more prominent role in determining demand.

These conditions are encouraging smartphone manufacturers to prioritise profitability over shipment volumes. Rather than pursuing aggressive sales growth, companies are focusing on protecting margins and managing production in response to higher component costs.

When Could Smartphone Shipments Recover?

A meaningful recovery in global smartphone shipments may remain difficult until component costs begin to ease and consumer affordability improves. Until then, manufacturers are likely to face a difficult balance between maintaining prices, protecting profit margins and attracting buyers.

For India, the projected 20% shipment decline in the third quarter represents a significant challenge ahead of the festive shopping season. Higher prices and cautious consumer spending could limit the boost that manufacturers and retailers typically expect during this period.

Although premium and mid-premium smartphones have shown greater resilience, weakness across affordable devices and falling shipments among major brands indicate that the slowdown is affecting much of the industry.

With memory prices remaining a major concern and manufacturers adjusting production plans, the smartphone market's recovery will depend heavily on whether component costs moderate and consumer demand strengthens in the coming quarters.
