Sensex Jumps 1,534 Points: 5 Reasons Behind Market Rally

Indian stock markets staged a strong recovery on Thursday, with the BSE Sensex jumping more than 1,500 points to close at a three-week high as investors stepped up buying in banking, information technology and heavyweight stocks, including Reliance Industries. Easing crude oil prices, a firmer rupee and enthusiasm surrounding Jio Platforms’ upcoming initial public offering (IPO) also supported market sentiment.

The 30-share BSE Sensex surged 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to settle at 74,315.61, near its intraday high. During the session, the index climbed as much as 1,548.4 points, or 2.12%, to reach 74,330.29.

The NSE Nifty 50 advanced 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to close at 22,997.35, marking its highest closing level since September 25. The rebound recovered the losses recorded in the previous trading session, despite weakness across several global markets.

Why Did the Sensex and Nifty Rally on Thursday?

1. Heavy Buying in Banking and IT Stocks

Strong buying in banking and information technology shares played a major role in Thursday’s market rally. Investors purchased large-cap stocks across several sectors, helping both benchmark indices maintain their gains through the trading session.

Among the Sensex constituents, Tech Mahindra led the gainers, rising 4.61%. ICICI Bank advanced 4.17%, while HCLTech gained 2.58%. HDFC Bank climbed 2.51%, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) rose 2.28%.

Bharti Airtel gained 2.94%, while Eternal advanced 2.77%. Private-sector banks, automakers, and oil and gas companies also attracted buying interest, contributing to the broad-based recovery.

According to Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, the sell-off in technology-heavy global markets amid concerns about elevated artificial intelligence valuations and higher US inflation helped improve India’s relative appeal.

Nair said investors appeared to rotate towards domestic large-cap technology companies, private financial institutions and defensive heavyweight stocks.

2. Reliance Industries Jumps on Jio Platforms IPO Buzz

Reliance Industries shares surged 4.03% after its digital and telecommunications subsidiary, Jio Platforms, announced the price band for its upcoming IPO. The development attracted investor attention and provided a boost to one of India’s most influential listed companies.

Jio Platforms has set a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share for the offering. At the upper end of the range, the IPO could raise approximately ₹30,213 crore, potentially making it India’s largest initial public offering.

The offering comprises a fresh issue of up to 27 crore equity shares, each with a face value of ₹10. Subscription is scheduled to open on Wednesday, October 21, and close on Friday, October 23.

Market participants viewed interest surrounding the Jio Platforms offering as an additional source of support for investor sentiment. The strong performance of Reliance Industries helped lift the benchmark indices during Thursday’s session.

3. Falling Crude Oil Prices Support Market Sentiment

Easing international crude oil prices provided another boost to Indian equities. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, declined 2.34% to $103.60 per barrel.

Lower crude prices can benefit India because the country relies heavily on imported oil to meet its energy requirements. A sustained decline can help reduce pressure on the import bill and limit cost increases for businesses that depend on fuel and transportation.

Cheaper oil can also ease inflationary pressures and support the rupee by reducing the amount India spends on energy imports. These factors are particularly relevant for investors assessing the outlook for corporate earnings, interest rates and domestic economic growth.

However, the impact depends on whether the decline in oil prices continues. Global supply disruptions and geopolitical developments remain important risks for energy markets.

4. Rupee Stability and Bond Yields Improve Investor Confidence

Stability in the rupee and a correction in bond yields also contributed to the improved market mood, according to Geojit Investments’ Vinod Nair.

A more stable currency can help reduce uncertainty for foreign investors and businesses with international operations. Lower bond yields can also make equities relatively more attractive by easing pressure on borrowing costs and valuations.

Expectations that equity taxation could be reconsidered added to risk appetite, Nair said. However, these expectations were a sentiment-supporting factor rather than confirmation of any policy change.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the previous session, offloading equities worth ₹1,857.44 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. Thursday’s strong rebound therefore came despite continued caution surrounding foreign investment flows.

5. Investors Buy the Dip After Wednesday’s Losses

Thursday’s gains also reflected a recovery after the previous session’s decline. On Wednesday, the Sensex dropped 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89, while the Nifty fell 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 22,622.70.

The buying gathered pace on Thursday, allowing both indices to erase their previous day’s losses and finish near their intraday highs.

Ponmudi R, CEO of online trading and wealth technology firm Enrich Money, said the benchmarks recorded a broad-based rebound as buying strengthened during the session.

He highlighted the contribution of IT stocks, private banks, automakers and oil and gas companies. Enthusiasm around the Jio Platforms IPO and a firmer rupee also supported the near-term market outlook, he added.

Top Sensex Gainers and Laggards

Technology and banking stocks featured prominently among Thursday’s biggest gainers. The performance of major index constituents reflected the broad recovery in investor sentiment.

  • Tech Mahindra: Up 4.61%, leading the Sensex gainers.
  • ICICI Bank: Advanced 4.17% amid strong buying in banking shares.
  • Reliance Industries: Rose 4.03% following the Jio Platforms IPO announcement.
  • Bharti Airtel: Gained 2.94%.
  • Eternal: Advanced 2.77%.
  • HCLTech: Climbed 2.58%.
  • HDFC Bank: Rose 2.51%.
  • TCS: Increased 2.28%.

Bharat Electronics, Trent and Hindustan Unilever were among the laggards within the Sensex, bucking the broader upward trend.

Global Markets Remain Under Pressure

The strong performance of Indian equities contrasted with losses in several Asian markets. South Korea’s Kospi plunged 7.57%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 4.90%. China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also ended lower.

European markets traded mixed, while US stocks closed lower on Wednesday amid concerns about inflation, interest rates and valuations in technology-heavy sectors.

Despite the weaker international backdrop, Indian benchmarks advanced as domestic buying in IT, financial and heavyweight stocks outweighed concerns about global market weakness.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

Thursday’s rally improved the near-term tone of the Indian Stock Market, but several factors could determine whether the recovery continues. Investors will be watching crude oil prices, movements in the rupee, foreign institutional investment flows and developments in global bond yields.

The performance of banking and IT stocks will also remain important, particularly as investors assess earnings prospects and the outlook for technology spending. The Jio Platforms IPO is another development likely to attract market attention in the coming sessions.

While the Sensex and Nifty ended sharply higher, continued volatility in global markets and uncertainty surrounding US inflation and interest rates could influence investor sentiment. The sustainability of Thursday’s rebound will depend on whether buying interest broadens and supportive domestic and international conditions persist.
