Wall Street Outlook: Oil Prices Rise Ahead of Key Earnings

US stock markets were poised for a muted opening on Monday as investors monitored rising oil prices, geopolitical developments and preparations for a busy week of corporate earnings and inflation data. The upcoming reports are expected to influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy.

Brent crude futures climbed above $106 a barrel, reaching their highest level in around two weeks following deadly strikes on Riyadh’s international airport over the weekend. However, gains in oil prices remained limited after US President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy facilities.

The details of the proposed energy ceasefire remained unclear, and the plan faced opposition in Washington. Investors were also assessing the potential impact of a US diesel-supply agreement with Moscow on energy markets and the broader economic outlook.

US Stock Futures Show Mixed Performance

US stock futures indicated a largely subdued start to trading on Monday, with investors weighing higher energy prices against expectations for strong corporate earnings.

At 8:31 a.m. Eastern Time, Dow E-minis rose 70 points, or 0.13%, while S&P 500 E-minis gained 4.25 points, or 0.05%. Nasdaq 100 E-minis declined 68.25 points, or 0.22%.

The three major US stock indexes finished higher last week, supported by optimism that artificial intelligence-related demand would help companies deliver strong third-quarter earnings. Hopes that the Federal Reserve could avoid raising interest rates in the near term also supported market sentiment.

Recent economic data showing a smaller-than-expected increase in inflation and weaker employment growth helped reduce expectations of an imminent rate hike. However, rising energy costs remain a concern for investors because they could keep inflation elevated and limit the central bank’s flexibility.

Oil Prices and Inflation Remain Key Market Risks

Brent crude prices moved above $106 per barrel after deadly strikes on Riyadh’s international airport heightened concerns about geopolitical risks and potential disruptions to energy markets.

Higher oil prices can increase transportation, manufacturing and operating costs for businesses while putting additional pressure on household budgets. If energy prices remain elevated, inflation could prove more persistent, potentially forcing central banks to maintain tighter monetary policies for longer.

US Treasury yields reached their highest levels in 24 years earlier this month as elevated energy prices fuelled concerns about persistent inflation. Higher yields can put pressure on stock valuations by increasing borrowing costs and reducing the relative appeal of future corporate earnings.

The US Treasury market remained closed on Monday for Columbus Day, limiting trading activity in government bonds during the session.

Investors Prepare for Major US Bank Earnings

The third-quarter earnings season begins on Tuesday, with several major US banks scheduled to release their financial results. Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase are among the first major companies due to report.

Investors will examine the results for signs of resilience in the US Economy, changes in lending activity and the impact of higher borrowing costs on businesses and consumers.

According to LSEG IBES data, earnings for companies in the S&P 500 are expected to increase by 30.6% in the third quarter. Such growth expectations have helped support optimism about the Stock Market, although investors will be watching closely to see whether companies meet forecasts and provide encouraging guidance.

Clark Bellin, president and chief investment officer at Bellwether Wealth, said investors would focus on how businesses are using artificial intelligence and whether their investments are translating into profits.

Bellin also highlighted companies’ ability to maintain or increase pricing power and manage rising borrowing costs as important themes during the earnings season.

Companies that can protect profit margins while managing higher financing expenses may attract investor attention, particularly as markets assess the potential effects of interest rates and inflation on business performance.

Inflation Data and Retail Sales in Focus

Alongside corporate earnings, investors will monitor several important US economic reports scheduled for release later this week, including consumer price inflation, producer price inflation and retail sales figures.

Consumer price index data will be particularly important because higher energy prices could push headline inflation higher. The figures cited in the report indicate that annual headline CPI inflation is expected to reach 3.7%, while core inflation is forecast to rise at a more moderate annual rate of 2.5%.

Headline inflation includes food and energy prices, while core inflation excludes those categories to provide a measure of underlying price pressures. Comparing the two measures could help investors assess how much rising energy costs are contributing to inflation.

Retail sales data will also offer insight into the strength of consumer spending, an important driver of US economic activity. Investors will look for signs of whether households are continuing to spend despite higher living costs and borrowing expenses.

Markets Expect the Federal Reserve to Hold Rates Steady

Market participants are closely tracking the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision as they assess the combined impact of inflation, employment growth and energy prices.

According to CME’s FedWatch tool, markets were pricing in a 19% probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase this month. Recent inflation and employment figures have reduced expectations of an immediate hike, although rising oil prices could complicate the outlook.

If inflation remains elevated, policymakers could face pressure to keep interest rates higher for longer. That could increase financing costs for companies and households while weighing on stock valuations. Conversely, continued moderation in inflation could strengthen expectations that the central bank will avoid further tightening in the near term.

Investors are therefore expected to scrutinise this week’s economic releases for clues about the direction of monetary policy and the likely effect on financial markets.

IREN, IonQ and Salesforce Lead Premarket Stock Moves

Several companies recorded notable movements in premarket trading as investors reacted to developments involving artificial intelligence, acquisitions and analyst ratings.

IREN: Shares of the data-centre company rose 3.5% after The Information reported that Anthropic had entered into a multiyear cloud agreement with the firm. The report drew attention to continuing investment in computing infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence services.

IonQ: Shares of the quantum computing company fell 4% after it announced an all-stock agreement to acquire privately held cybersecurity company Elisity. The transaction was valued at up to $1.3 billion.

Salesforce: Shares gained 4% after BofA Global Research upgraded its rating on the software company to “buy” from “underperform”. The rating change provided support to the stock ahead of the regular trading session.

Wall Street Awaits Earnings and Economic Signals

US markets entered the week balancing expectations for strong corporate earnings against concerns about oil prices, inflation and interest rates. The start of the banking earnings season will provide an early indication of how businesses and consumers are coping with current economic conditions.

Investors will also look to inflation and retail sales data for further evidence about the health of the US economy and the Federal Reserve’s likely policy direction. While recent economic figures have eased expectations of an immediate rate increase, the rise in energy prices remains a potential source of renewed inflationary pressure.

With major earnings reports and economic indicators due throughout the week, market sentiment is likely to remain sensitive to developments in energy markets, corporate profit forecasts and expectations for US monetary policy.
