Abu Dhabi T10 Reboot: Government Takes Control as Stability Becomes Priority

Abu Dhabi T10 reboot is taking shape as the league prepares to enter its tenth season, with the Abu Dhabi government taking a controlling stake and targeting greater stability after years of ownership changes, payment concerns and integrity issues.

The tournament was launched in 2017 by UAE businessman Shaji ul Mulk as the world’s first recognised T10 franchise league. Since then, it has attracted several high-profile international players but has also faced challenges that have affected its reputation and long-term identity.

Abu Dhabi Government Takes Controlling Stake

The Abu Dhabi government acquired a majority stake in the competition earlier in 2026 through the Abu Dhabi Cricket and Sports Hub. The move is designed to provide the league with institutional stability and greater control over its future direction.

Abu Dhabi Sport Council CEO Matt Boucher acknowledged that decisions made by third-party franchise owners had previously created challenges for the league’s reputation.

According to Boucher, the government believes that greater institutional involvement can help establish Abu Dhabi T10 as a reliable, high-profile sporting property within the city’s growing winter sports calendar.

Corruption Issues Have Affected Abu Dhabi T10

The league has experienced significant integrity-related problems during its history. In September 2023, the ICC charged eight individuals associated with one of the franchises for corruption-related breaches connected to an earlier season.

More recently, USA player B Akhilesh Reddy received an eight-year ban after being found guilty of violating the ICC’s anti-corruption code during the previous season.

The competition has also faced reported concerns over player payments. Such incidents have contributed to reputational challenges for a tournament that has attempted to establish itself as a major annual cricket event.

Frequent Franchise Changes Created Instability

Another major issue has been the frequent turnover among franchise owners. Between six and ten teams have participated in different editions, with as many as 18 different teams appearing in the league’s history.

Eight teams competed in the most recent season, but constant ownership changes have made it difficult to develop strong and recognisable franchise identities.

The new ownership structure is therefore focused on creating longer-term relationships rather than relying on short contracts that can lead to repeated changes from one season to the next.

Long-Term Franchise Owners Are a Priority

The Abu Dhabi authorities are currently conducting a bidding process overseen by Deloitte to identify new team owners. Final bids are expected during the current week.

Boucher said the league wants regular franchise owners and longer contracts, moving away from one- or two-year agreements that result in frequent changes.

Long-term ownership could help franchises develop stronger brands, build local fan bases and create greater commercial value while also giving the tournament a more consistent identity.

IPL Franchise Owners Show Interest

The new structure has reportedly attracted interest from investors and franchise owners with connections to South Asia. Boucher confirmed that there had been outreach involving owners and investors familiar to the Abu Dhabi authorities.

Several IPL franchise owners already operate teams in overseas T20 competitions, including the ILT20, and their involvement could potentially bring greater commercial expertise and global visibility to the Abu Dhabi T10.

However, the current bidding process is being conducted independently, and the league has not publicly confirmed which specific investors will ultimately acquire franchises.

Abu Dhabi Wants Its Own Premier Cricket Event

The government’s involvement is also linked to Abu Dhabi’s wider ambition to strengthen its position as an international sporting destination.

The UAE already hosts major cricket events, while the ILT20 has established itself as a prominent competition in Dubai. Abu Dhabi wants the T10 tournament to become another major fixture in its winter sporting calendar.

The city’s sporting schedule already features major international events, including Formula 1 and the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. A stable cricket competition could add another important attraction to that calendar.

No Immediate Expansion Beyond Eight Teams

Despite the planned overhaul, there are currently no immediate plans to expand the Abu Dhabi T10 beyond eight teams.

There are also no immediate plans to create a wider regional competition involving Dubai or Saudi Arabia. Officials instead want to concentrate on improving the existing tournament before considering expansion.

Boucher identified several areas that need improvement, particularly governance and the overall structure of the event. He indicated that expansion could be considered in the future, but not within the next three years.

Governance Is Central to the League’s Future

The Abu Dhabi T10’s reboot is ultimately about more than changing franchise owners. The competition needs stronger governance, financial reliability and integrity safeguards if it is to establish itself as a sustainable top-level cricket property.

The involvement of the Abu Dhabi government provides a stronger institutional foundation, but the success of the reboot will depend on whether the league can maintain consistent ownership, protect player welfare and strengthen confidence among players, teams, sponsors and fans.

What the Abu Dhabi T10 Reboot Could Mean

A successful restructuring could give the tournament an opportunity to move beyond the controversies that have affected its reputation. Stable franchise ownership could also allow teams to develop recognisable identities and invest in long-term commercial strategies.

With the league approaching its tenth season, the timing of the overhaul is significant. Rather than immediately expanding the competition, Abu Dhabi’s current strategy is to strengthen its foundations and make the existing eight-team format more sustainable.

If those improvements succeed, the Abu Dhabi T10 could emerge as a more stable and credible part of the UAE’s international cricket calendar.
