Adam Copeland, better known to WWE fans as Edge, has opened up about the final stage of his WWE career and explained why his experience in AEW feels different. The former World Heavyweight Champion said his WWE run had become heavily controlled, overproduced and over-rehearsed.
Copeland, who is currently signed with AEW and holds the World Tag Team Championship alongside his longtime friend Christian Cage, discussed his career during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.
Adam Copeland Says WWE Became Too Controlled
Reflecting on the end of his WWE tenure, Copeland explained that the level of production and rehearsal eventually made it difficult for him to experiment and explore new ideas.
According to the former WWE Superstar, the restrictions meant performers had fewer opportunities to make creative decisions in the moment. He contrasted that experience with his current environment in AEW, where he believes wrestlers have greater freedom.
Copeland said his WWE experience toward the end was “overproduced” and “over-rehearsed,” adding that the situation prevented him from exploring too much.
Copeland Compares AEW Freedom to WWE’s Attitude Era
Copeland also explained why he enjoys working in AEW, highlighting the freedom to experiment and try different approaches during matches and segments.
The WWE Hall of Famer compared that creative environment to WWE’s iconic Attitude Era. He recalled how performers during that period sometimes entered segments with only a basic plan and could figure out certain elements as the action unfolded.
For Copeland, that sense of unpredictability is one of the most enjoyable aspects of his current AEW run. The veteran believes the ability to explore ideas without everything being predetermined allows performers to create more naturally.
Adam Copeland Reflects on Working With Roman Reigns
During the same interview, Copeland also discussed one of the biggest opponents he faced during his final WWE run: Roman Reigns.
Copeland praised Reigns as a performer and described working with him as an enjoyable experience. The two veterans shared several important matches during Copeland’s final WWE stint, including a major WrestleMania encounter.
The Rated-R Superstar said Reigns was easy and enjoyable to work with and praised the evolution of his character. Copeland also acknowledged that opinions about a wrestler’s popularity or status can vary among fans.
Roman Reigns Dominated Their WWE Rivalry
Although Copeland enjoyed working with Reigns, the results of their rivalry heavily favored The Tribal Chief. Reigns defeated Copeland in their notable encounters, including their WrestleMania match.
The rivalry brought together two generations of WWE main-event talent. Copeland’s veteran experience and Reigns’ emergence as one of WWE’s defining stars created a compelling matchup during Copeland’s final years with the company.
Why Copeland’s AEW Run Has Felt Different
Copeland’s comments highlight one of the biggest differences he perceives between his WWE experience and his time in AEW: creative freedom.
After decades in professional wrestling, Copeland has experienced multiple eras and different approaches to producing television. His comments suggest that having room to improvise and experiment remains important to him even at this stage of his career.
His AEW run has also allowed him to reunite with Christian Cage, his longtime friend and former tag-team partner. The two have shared a long history dating back to their early days in wrestling, making their current championship partnership another significant chapter in Copeland’s career.
