Ajinkya Rahane Reveals How He Saved Yashasvi Jaiswal From Four-Match Ban

Ajinkya Rahane has opened up about a tense incident involving Yashasvi Jaiswal during the 2022 Duleep Trophy final, revealing that the young batter was reportedly on the verge of receiving a four-match ban.

Jaiswal was involved in repeated verbal exchanges with South Zone batter T Ravi Teja during the final despite receiving multiple warnings from match officials. Rahane, who was leading West Zone, initially attempted to calm his teammate and prevent the situation from escalating.

However, when the confrontation continued, Rahane took the decision to send Jaiswal away from the field for a period of time. The former India captain has now revealed that his intervention may have played a major role in preventing a lengthy suspension.

Rahane reveals how Jaiswal escaped four-match ban

Speaking to The Indian Express, Rahane explained that he sensed the situation could get out of control and believed it was his responsibility as captain to intervene.

Rahane revealed that the match referee had already prepared a letter imposing a four-match ban on Jaiswal. However, after seeing Rahane’s intervention, the official decided not to take further action.

“I sensed the situation, then, would have gone out of hand. Yes, at that point Yashasvi must have felt bad. But we’ve seen many situations where players have been banned, and you never know how time changes.”

Rahane said he understood that one missed opportunity could potentially change a player’s career trajectory, which made him determined to control the situation before it went too far.

He added that the match referee showed him the prepared four-match ban letter before tearing it up.

“The match referee was ready with a 4-match ban—the letter was already written. He came up to me and said, ‘This is the letter, but because you did this, I’m tearing it up.’ He tore the letter in front of me.”

Rahane admitted that he was relieved Jaiswal escaped punishment and later went on to establish himself as an India regular.

Reflecting on the incident, Rahane stressed that he did not want to take credit for Jaiswal’s subsequent success but acknowledged how significant the moment could have been for the youngster’s career.

He suggested that a four-match ban at that stage could have affected Jaiswal’s opportunities and potentially changed the course of his career.

Jaiswal has since developed into one of India’s leading young batters across formats, making the incident an interesting chapter in his journey from domestic cricket to the international stage.
